We’ll see how the National Polls turn out on Monday. Meanwhile….

Dartmouth has climbed into the top spot in ECAC men’s standings one precarious point ahead of Cornell. Harvard within 3 of Dartmouth at 4th slot. Princeton defeated Clarkson and then lost to lowly (in the standings) St.Laurence to slide down to 5th, 2 points ahead of Colgate. Yale has the eighth spot. I believe the first 4 teams draw a bye in the ECAC playoff first round and the next 4 get home ice for the opening one game round. It would be good for Princeton if it can get home ice but there is enough left to the season to leave Princeton and Yale’s chances uncertain.

On the women’s side, having shut out St. Laurence, P battled Clarkson tonite tied with them for first. It was no contest, P took it 6-1. I saw something I had never seen before, P scored 2 short handed goals on the same power play. The P defense stellar all weekend. Y in third, 5 points back, Brown in 5th, Cornell 6th. Four games left for the women and while finishing first would be great, drawing a first round bye would be very good. The latter is not mathematically guaranteed at this point, but looks likely.

In the ECAC Men:

QU 38 points
DC 36
Cornell 36
P 31
H 30

There are six games to go, so the placement up and down the 12 team standings can change significantly.

The USCH national poll has:

QU 5th
Cornell 9
DC 12
H 26

ECAC Women:

P 44 points
Y 42
QU 40
Clarkson 38
Brown 38
Cornell 37.5

There are two games to go, tough ones for P. If P accrues 1 point, or Clarkson and Brown accrue no more than 5, P guarantees a first round bye. While I hope P sweeps, I will take a top 4 finish if we get it. If P drops both in regulation and either Brown and Clarkson win both in regulation and tie P for 4th, I don't know how the tiebreaker would play out.

USCH national poll:

QU 7th
P 8
Y 9
Cornell 11
Brown 18

As top 4 in ECAC men's hockey get a first round bye, it's going to be down to either Princeton (currently 31 points) or Harvard (30 points).

Both squads have 6 games remaining, with Princeton at Harvard the final weekend.

The remaining schedule, however, significantly favors Harvard:

Princeton:
@ Quinnipiac (13-2-1)
vs Quinnipiac (13-2-1)
vs Colgate (8-6-2)
vs Cornell (12-4)
@ Harvard (10-6)
@ Dartmouth (11-4-1)

Harvard:
@ Brown (3-12-1)
@ Yale (6-10)
@ Union (6-9-1)
@ RPI (4-12)
Princeton (10-6)
Quinnipiac (13-2-1)

Harvard is on the road for 4 of 6 while Princeton plays 3 or its remaining 6 games at home. However, Princeton plays the top 5 teams (excluding itself), including national #5 Quinnipiac twice. Harvard has 4 road games against teams with losing records before finishing at home against Princeton and Quinnipiac.

Thanks. Good analysis. While an unlikely bye would be nice, if Princeton can get home ice in the first round, that would be a good result in Syer’s second year.

Seems there are two main battles:
1. Qunnipiac, Cornell and Dartmouth for ECAC regular season champion; and
2. Princeton or Harvard for 4th place and a first round bye. Perhaps more importantly, assuming the 5th place team survives it's opening home game against the worst team in the league, the regular season seeding will determine whether Princeton vs Harvard is in Princeton or Cambridge.

Heading into the men’s final weekend:

QU 47
DC 43
Cornell 41
P 35
H 32
Union 31

QU on top but DC within range, and plays QU and P at home. QU also plays at a good H team. Cornell is not mathematically eliminated from a possible 1st place tie, but that seems unlikely. I think QU hangs on to the League title.

After picking up 4 points, including a 4-2 upset of Cornell at Baker Rink, P has a shot at a first round bye. P, IMO however, is an underdog at H and DC, although 7 weeks ago narrowly defeated both at Baker. P could nail down a bye with an outright win at H Friday night. Whatever happens this weekend, P has home ice in its opening round. Union not mathematically eliminated from a first round bye going into the weekend.

Quinnipiac:
THIS WEEK: At Dartmouth, at Harvard.
ON THEIR OWN: Clinches first with one point against Dartmouth.
BEST CASE: First.
WORST CASE: Drops to second with two regulation losses if Dartmouth
also gets at least two points against Princeton.
TIEBREAKERS: Beats Cornell; could win or lose* against Dartmouth.

Dartmouth:
THIS WEEK: Quinnipiac, Princeton.
ON THEIR OWN: Finishes second with four points on the weekend.
BEST CASE: Would take first with a sweep in regulation if Quinnipiac
gets no more than one point against Harvard.
WORST CASE: Falls to third with a pair of losses in regulation if
Cornell gets at least three points.
TIEBREAKERS: Beats Cornell; could win* or lose against Quinnipiac.

Cornell:
THIS WEEK: St. Lawrence, Clarkson.
ON THEIR OWN: One point will give the Big Red third place.
BEST CASE: Climbs up to second with two regulation wins if Dartmouth
gets no more than three points.
WORST CASE: Would finish fourth if they are swept in regulation and
Princeton wins in regulation twice.
TIEBREAKERS: Loses to Quinnipiac, Dartmouth, and Princeton.

Princeton:
THIS WEEK: At Harvard, at Dartmouth.
ON THEIR OWN: Locks up fourth with a win over Harvard.
BEST CASE: Finishes third with a regulation sweep if Cornell does not
get any points.
WORST CASE: Ends up sixth with two regulation losses if Harvard gets a
point against Quinnipiac and Union gets at least five points.
TIEBREAKERS: Beats Cornell; could win or lose against Harvard and
Union.

QU 7 down from 5
Cornell 11 no change
DC 14 no change
Union 21
P 28

I have noticed before that a loss to a lesser ranked team hadn’t dropped a team in this poll and I realize what other teams do the same weekend matters, and Cornell’s loss to us, a much lower team, didn’t cost them in the poll. P is now at 28 probably courtesy of our Cornell win.

Penn State is 5 in men and 3 in women poll. Both coached by former P coaches.

Neglected to note Union ranked 21, ahead of P in this poll but trailing by 4 points in the ECAC standings, for now.

QU hung on to First although DC made it interesting by coming from behind to best them Friday night. DC needed help from H against QU the next night but didn’t get it. Meanwhile, the biggest home crowd in the DC arena’s history, 5195, watched P blow a 2-0 lead in the third period due to another DC comeback. In OT, P picked up the extra point by winning the shootout — enabling P to claim 4th and a bye for the first time in 17 years. Union a point back in 5th and H dropping into 6th. P had blown a 3-1 lead in a regulation loss Friday night to H.

DC and Cornell tie for second, with DC seeded second. These 2 teams had great seasons.

H women took P to a third game in thevECAC playoffs, a decisive 5-1 P win. Could have been closer with P giving H 4 power plays in the third, but H could not capitalize. They only lose 3 seniors and should continue their move up the ECAC ladder next year.

QU 5-1 over Y for the ECAC tournament win and automatic bid to the NCAAs.

I think there is one more men’s game being played but we do know Princeton will host Union this Friday in the next round which is best of 3.

The ECAC men’s quarterfinals best of 3 starts Friday:

Clarkson at QU
Colgate at DC
H at Cornell
Union at P

The ECAC is a very strong league on the national scene. I would expect as many as three teams go to the NCAAs. QU will get at least an at-large bid even if it loses the tourney’s automatic bid. I think DC gets in one way or another. P would get in only if it upsets its way into a tourney title.

QU won the automatic bid on the women’s side. At large bids announced shortly. I think Y gets one and maybe P, or vice versa lol.

We opened the season at UCONN and lost both games. It is such a long season though, we will see if we can reverse our fortunes against them at this stage. Winner gets Penn State.
