Subject: Reno UMASS?

Umass is taking a hard look at Tony Reno for its head coaching job. My immediate thought is Reno wouldn’t leave Yale for UMASS which has fired its last 5 coaches.

If he does Kevin Cahill would land the Yale job and bring his former colleague Joe Conlin who will be fired tomorrow from Fordham leaving Yale in a very good spot.

Reno’s son is buried on the depth chart behind a better QB and will likely never see the field at South Carolina. I think that would be the only way he leaves Yale.

What are you hearing?

There doesn't seem to be any press indicating that UMass is targeting Reno.

UMASS has reached out to Reno. If he's interested or not is a different story.

He checks all the boxes for UMASS. Successful head coach, local ties, can recruit, age.

Umass Insider, you make some compelling points that could possibly link Reno to the Umass job yet is Umass really a step up from Yale? It seems like such a challenging place to win.

I guess time will tell! Please keep us posted!!

Getting paid millions of dollars a year to coach football is a step up

Way up

His son has 4 years of eligibility left. He could walk into a starting role at Rice and or UMASS and play for his dad. Worked for Deion Sanders kids.

It's TBD whether UMASS is willing in invest in football but they do move into the MAC full time next year.

You are not taking into account just how attractive ADs find a proven head coach/blue chip QB combo. His son following him, and presumably staying all four years, is putting him on the radar for schools that otherwise would not entertain him.

Reno would make either team better. He is a proven winner and has built a winning culture at Yale that was floundering. Hi son will compete for the QB job at SC. Watch!!!!

Gentlemen; assuming a head coach position is offered at either of the proposed institutions the prospect of remaining our blue head coach for the next 15 years cannot be overlooked also with the prospect his son could transfer. In reality, it all comes down the economics.

Rice would be a much better job (pays 1 million dollars a year ) over UMASS. I would view Yale as a better job than Umass

Reno met with UMass yesterday. Initial word is that he is not interested and the two parties walked away without an agreement.

Complete speculation, but I suspect that Reno and Rice are pretty advanced in negotiations.

Texas FB media outlets confirm Tony is front runner, suggest this will be a package deal with son joining father as HC-QB combo. Very bad news for Yale.

Reno did interview and will take the job if offered. Umass has not made him an offer and is waiting for a decision on Neal Brown at WVU. Reno pushed hard this off-season to leave Yale, runner up at Rice and still in the mix at UMASS.

Neal Brown was fired as HC of WV yesterday so I imagine that makes him the leading candidate for the UMass job.

Great news for Yale. Vicki Chun should immediately get to work in giving Reno a contact extension. He is one of the top coach’s in Yale’s illustrious history. Let’s not forget that not that long ago Yale had lost 14 of 15 to Harvard. Now they’ve won three in a row and six of the last eight. Yale can’t afford to lose him.

It's clear that Reno does not view his current job as a "lifetime appointment" the way Cozza, Restic, and Murphy apparently did.
If he continues to succeed, he'll be gone sooner than later. If he doesn't continue to succeed, it's a moot point.
Coaching contracts are essentially in pencil; a long-term extension wouldn't prevent him from leaving for an attractive FB$ job.
And then we'd be left with the horror of Ms. Chun hiring his replacement...

That’s exactly what I want to avoid. A contract extension would increase the buyout and also increase the stakes for Reno in giving up job security. I know it is by no means a guarantee to keep Reno, but it would strengthen Yale’s hands. Plus there’s always the old adage to consider that people quit their bosses, not their jobs. Perhaps Reno feels unappreciated. A contract extension can rectify that too. Yale has managed to keep James Jones by giving him a lengthy contract extension, and he is arguably more marketable than Reno. They can keep Reno too if they put the same effort into it.

If an Ivy coach wants to go to FBS and gets an offer to do so, an Ivy team is never going to offer a competitive salary to stay.

I agree that Reno has done a fine job at Yale. But it doesn't look like he's going anywhere now.
