I think George Phillies doesn't like Ayn Rand. He asserts the attribution to Rand of the "historical interpretation of the Nolan statement" is wrong.

In the first place, McPherson's excellent essay doesn't mention Nolan at all. The Libertarian Party may have been conceived in Nolan's living room, but it grew into a political force in the womb of Rand's popular expression of the ideas. Whether Nolan cribbed from Rand or chanced on a similar wording isn't important. It was Rand who made the ideas known to tens of thousands of potential activists and, thus, made the LP possible.

You can be a fine Libertarian without liking (or even knowing about) Rand. I think about half of our activists are in that category. That doesn't change the historical fact that it was Rand who nursed the ivory tower notion of "libertarian" into the political reality it became.
