Great article as usual Roderick! I agree completely, and found "Desecration as Art" particularly insightful.

Just a side comment, probably meaning nothing... I've seen the piece "Piss Christ" live in a gallery, and it is a powerful and intriguing work. First off, it's HUGE, maybe 5' x 6'. The use of color is brilliant. It actually is a quite beautiful piece, if you forget about the urine part. Even if you don't, that and the elephant dung works raise interesting questions about how we view normal bodily functions in various cultures.

Of course, this has nothing to do with whether it should've received an NEA grant. The perverse thing about it is that these grants create unnecessary division over art - I doubt many would've given "Piss Christ" a second thought if it weren't for taxpayer funding of it.

So I guess my only relevant point is that the NEA judges may well have other motives for giving grants to such art, besides just wanting to bash Catholicism. They probably sincerely see aesthetic value here. If anything, if I am right, that makes them even more out of touch with the taxpayers.

yours in liberty --
