I'm not sure the gun control lobby in the U.S. is an apt metaphor to use in describing U.S. foreign policy as it pertains to Iraq. And surely, equating the arsenals of a third world despot with the stockpiles of colonial weaponry forces one to stretch the bounds of imagination. The difference between Iraq's nuclear reactors that the Israelis destroyed, and a flint-lock rifle used by the Continental Army, renders any such comparison ineffective.
-I cannot ignore the fact that, for the last 20 years, streams of refugees have escaped the Hussein regime with tales of internal atrocities.
-I cannot ignore a regime which finances world terrorism. In order to advocate a hands-off approach to Iraq, I would have to pretend that the above facts were not in evidence.
Here's what I can ignore: Reasoning which dictates that we should not take measures against Iraq because "He does not have an atomic device...YET". I suspect those who espouse that view will be the same ones to say, "We cannot take measures because he has a nuclear weapon".
There is a global movement afoot which is completely opposed to the free exchange of goods, services, and ideas. The leaders of this movement want to kill us. The minions of this movement want to kill us. They have said it, and they have done it. They have made it clear that they will try to do it again. The Hussein regime openly supports them. Why are so many people unwilling to confront the enemies of capitalism head on?
