From that remark and from all I've read on him, it sounds as though he faced the world with a tough,gruff exterior but he'd show his heart of gold to those he cared about and knew he could trust not to walk all over him. I also believe he had a genuine love of performing and making people laugh. Of course, since I never got to meet him, this is pure conjecture.
