The mast on "Ice Maiden" is constructed as follows: 15.25mtrs (50ft) from deck to trunk. The three legs are 60mm O.D black galvanised tube. The struts are 25mm O.D. black galvanised tube spaced at 300mm centres up the legs. The rear leg is raked aft. At the base the legs form an equilateral triangle of 200mm ctrs. The three sets of spreaders are the same material as the struts. The twin back stays are 1.75 inch circ. wire and are secured at the corners of the stern. There is an outer twin side stay from the top of the mast to the outboard side of the amas. Also there is an inner twin side stay from the top of the mast to the outboard side of the main hull. These stays are of the same dimension as the back stay. The diamond stay is 1 inch circ. wire. Also I carry two forestays, one to the outer end of the bowspit and the other to the bow. These wires are the same as the sidestays and the backstays. Beneath the mast below the deck is a 150mm OD thick walled tube that extends to the keel. The top of the tube has a flat steel 1/4 inch plate with 8 bolts welded to it. These bolts extend thought the deck and through a similar plate mounted at the base of the mast where it is secured with nuts and locknuts. I have been told that the mast is over engineered. But I have carried my full unreefed main, two jibs and the spinnaker in 35knts gusting to 50knts for more than 12 hous on a downwind run. It got to be interesting as I was getting a buzz through the helm as the twin outboard rudders began to flutter on down wave surfs. Most of the time "Ice Maiden was riding her bow wave.
