I used to build eco-houses (earthship, cob, strawbale) and have built a few rocket stoves. I was initially taught by Ianto Evans who has a good book on the subject, called (unsurprisingly) "Rocketstoves" - just googled it for a link and found it is superceeded by "Rocket Mass Heaters"...

Anyway - we trialled the concept using 1, 2.5 and 5 gallon tins (from paint or catering-size vege oil) with various ducting/steel pipe for the uprights either side of the burn tube. All worked pretty well. The easy way to tune is to get them to burn with no smoke (maximum combustion), just play with the diameters.

We found the best way was to play with models and then replicate a successful one...

As I mentioned before, we set fire to a tarp 12+ feet above the top of the chimney with an uncapped version - the temp at the elbow between the burn tube(horizontal) and main flue hits about 1100F - so I would definitely remember to put the jacket and hotplate on and taking a flue out from the bottom before running one with a sail etc anywhere nearby.
