Yeah, so far so good. We haven't been anywhere where an extra few miles of VHF range would make a difference.

On the plus side, not having wires running up the mast is HUGE. Anchor lights and antennae were a huge source of frustration on my last boat. Everything would be working at the dock, and then after a hard sail, something would wriggle loose and the light would blink out at anchor. Eventually, we replaced the wires for the anchor light and found like seventeen shady splices in crusty thirty-year-old vintage wire.

For anchor light, we use one of these:

I just crimped on some alligator clips. We hang it from a shroud or the running backs. I've actually heard it's better NOT to have an anchor light at the mast-head. Up there, some drunken powerboater is going to think it's Venus. Legally, it just needs to be the highest light on the boat, so just above eye-level is probably most likely to get noticed before impact... :-)
