Mark, you're dead on. Once you start adding up the figure with real values, there is only on inescapable conclusion.

That doesn't mean, however, there are a lot of places with "flexible" levels of consumption that can be cut back.

And interesting article I read somewhere compared gasoline to diesel consumption. Gasoline consumption is "flexible" because the majority of it is "discretionary." Diesel, on the other hand, is not, because it goes to real goods and services, transportation, electricity, and others, with which goods simply could not arive. As well, as the usage of diesel as a non-discretionary cost of business, is probably already cost factored into the highest level of efficiency it plausibly can be. There is likely no way tocut back. Looking at people driving around recreationally is the wrong place to look. Look at what must occur to keep civilization running--now you understand the issue.
