Subject: Oar Club Membership Story

I read Jay's "Sea-Steading." I purchased it from Amazon, after reading the mostly favorable reviews and comments. As I see it, a few readers didn't get the main purpose of the book. To quote an Amazon reviewer, "Jerome Fitzgerald spends too much time sidetracking into his rants against religion." This reviewer misunderstood the most valuable chapters in the book. It's where the reader may gain the somewhat unlikely experience of strongly identifying with Jay's values and philosophy. If the reader finds "a match," they could be a good candidate for Jay’s way of life.

For now, I'll try to err on the side of understatement but I'm here on the Oar Club forum and need I say any more than I found the read to indicate a match. Well…I guess I should say a little more because I note that I barely qualify for Oar Club membership, but I do qualify, nonetheless.

My qualifying passage occurred when I crewed on a 70' schooner for one summer month during my teens. It was the summer of 1974 and I'm now 50 so, if there are any lies in my story, I'll plea age-related memory loss. I know we visited well more than 4 ports and completed one passage of 100 miles across the Alenuihaha Channel--probably from Puako Bay, Hawaii to Kaunolu Bay, Lanai or just north of the Bay because we rowed to shore and ate pineapples on the way to town. I’m now trying to identify our ports on Google maps. We sailed the islands of Hawaii, Lanai, and Maui. The schooner was operated in historic trim and rigging so no engine. Obviously, my Small Boat Sailing merit badge in no way qualified me to pilot something like an 80 ton schooner, but I'll submit my experience as a crew member as qualifying here. I still remember most of the terms in the Oar Club "first lesson" and promise to brush up on the rest.

Since my teens, I've mostly been a windsurfer (it was invented back then)--sailing the Gorge near the city of Portland, Oregon, where I live. I'm planning to move to WA. My goal is to transfer my employment to Dupont, WA and hold onto my job for the short term while I acquire a boat and learn to sail the Puget Sound somewhat proficiently. I'd consider telecommuting some days from the Bellingham area but the Olympic Peninsula makes for cheaper living.

I think I have something to offer an Oar Club community. I've had two careers--electrical engineer and airline pilot. I'm still a part-time flight instructor and pretty good with weather, physics, and mechanical things. I own a pretty good collection of tools. I've invented a few fun and even useful things during my life and can simply "make stuff work."

That's about all for now. This isn't a job resume, after all. Hope to meet some of you soon.
