Hmm... I don't have much to add as I know basically nothing about the pyramids. But one thing I do know (or think I know) is that they were massive intergenerational projects, but the finished results were pretty durable once finished.

The thing about our highway system and "filling potholes" is that our roads are pretty soft and erodable. Let them go a couple seasons and they'll biodegrade.

So it's not just the total amount of work, but the rate of work necessary to stay ahead of entropy.
