I guess I was thinking of when you had very little wind and you needed to hit ,for example, a certain point on your voyage before the tide changed. We have very strong tides around the entrance to the harbour where I'm moored, especially around springs. You might not want to be reducing sail area in order to get the oars out to help you beat the tide. I guess it's all a game of compromise?
