Once you can do the math and believe the results, it interesting to start thinking what the results mean. For instance, Let say that we annually increase our oil consumption by just 3%/year. Then use will double in 24 years. What does this mean? Well one thing it means is that over the next 24 years we will use as much oil as had been used in the entire history of oil consumption! In North America that history is about 150 years.
People who talk about “sustainable growth rates” of 5-7% don’t know what the hell their talking about. At this point in history Zero or negative is the only “sustainable” rate!

PS a short cut to figure doubling is the rule of 72, just divide 72/percent increase and you get approximate years to double. No need for logarithms or spread sheets.
