Subject: Weight, and the pure sailing craft?

Hi Guys,

Do you have any thoughts about weight on the pure sailing craft? Is there a real benefit to shaving pounds where possible?

I'm rebuilding a 1961 Pearson Triton, and am somewhat torn between the cost of building her bulletproof, and keeping her light at the same time. It seems that expense is the third choice, pick any two! (Lacking funds means a spartan boat as far as accessories go...)

In some cases its the difference between balsa in the new decks, or foam. Epoxy vs Vinyl ester and the different layup schedule required... I find myself tallying up the total cost, balancing it against the value of having a boat that gets up and moves when ever there is wind.

Then theres the question of where to put the weight. Like the battery I killed by placing it in the bilge... Where to put all the water tanks, and how to keep 300 feet of anchor chain out of the tip of the bow while still having a V-berth.

( I blame Jay for these misguided thoughts... Pull out the engine and she got more fun, whats another 500 pounds do? Grin)
