There is a fairly traditional rudder build blow by blow with photos and descent instruction in a book by Larry Pardey. My husbands cousin basically followed what was explained and we now have a new rudder that is almost completely finished (he is just putting on the final touches in shaping and then we have to get her epoxied and painted) that is solid black locust and siliconbronze (? on spelling). It rocks and I think it will outlast the life of the boat assuming we don't run into the hard too often with it. I can't remember the name of the book but it was all about boat building.
