Just saw the Islander...

Hull and deck were good though it needs a total interior refit sooner rather than later and it would make sense to do it at the same time as pulling the engine. The V berth was a letdown, very little headroom made it difficult to even get in and it would be tricky to retain the size if it was lowered. I would probably set up a second quarter berth after yanking the engine. The owner pointed out one unidentified small leak somewhere around a portlight or stanchion tracking into the dinette area when it rains that had started to rot the back of a unit and I think there may be a few others (mildew and rotted wood in some of the units above the galley). I am pretty confident I could deal with it.

Some of the stanchions needed firming up and all really need backing plates (currently just bolts and washers)

Rigging etc was usable (no corroded stays, mast needed a paint and the wooden spreaders probably need replacing soon but was generally sound and the base of the mast and the step looked good). There were a fair number of sails in reasonable condition, including storm sails and a big drifter, and the main was set up with lazyjacks. There were also mast steps (which made checking the rigging and mast higher up do-able.

The whole boat had already been rewired to a high standard, new everything.

Many spare and ready to fit bits either new or in excellent condition(diaphragm sump pumps, foot pumps for the sink, led mast light etc) that would be a bonus.

Damn I am having poor luck - I just got an email from the seller as I type this that indicates a sale to another buyer is imminent. It was definitely the best option I have actually been aboard so far - doable work and doable price without having to get a loan to finish school.

I am now left with waiting for another boat with potential to turn up... I am reconsidering both a smaller boat and getting those student loans...
