News Release
Public urged to voice preferences for Babcock Ranch Preserve recreation

Contact: Jerrie Lindsey, 850-410-4951

Babcock Ranch Preserve management partners invite the public to attend two meetings designed to gather information about potential recreational opportunities on the preserve. The meetings will be June 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Board Room of the Lee County School Board, 2855 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, and June 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Port Charlotte Cultural Center, 2280 Aaron St., Port Charlotte.

Public input will follow a brief presentation of the draft analysis of potential recreational opportunities for the 73,236 acres of state and county-owned land.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and other Babcock Ranch Preserve management partners - Babcock Ranch Management LLC, Babcock Ranch Inc., the Florida Division of Forestry and Lee and Charlotte counties - have been working with The Genesis Group to develop a Recreation Opportunities Analysis for the preserve.

"We hope to have a good turnout from the public for these meetings," said Jerrie Lindsey, director of the FWC's Office of Recreation Services. "Broad participation from surrounding communities will ensure a better plan," she said.

The Recreation Opportunities Analysis will provide a broad overview of potential activities, amenities and locations but does not provide site-specific design. It will offer guidance to the Babcock Ranch Preserve management partners to develop future recreational activities on the vast tract in Charlotte and Lee counties.

Prior to its purchase by the state and Lee County, Babcock Ranch Preserve was part of a 91,361-acre working ranch known as Crescent B Ranch. Since 1914, Crescent B Ranch has produced timber, cattle, row crops and sod, and provided recreational opportunities such as hunting and ecotourism.

The state-county partnership acquired the preserve through the Florida Forever Program and the Lee County Conservation 20/20 Program.
