Hi Mark, Just trying to explain what’s going on. Do you think the only hunters the FWC is looking at is the one’s going out of state? There are many more hunters in this state that would hunt if we had better hunting on our WMA’s and a fair system to apply for the quotas. By the way I lived and hunted in South Georgia for 8 years and saw plenty of Florida hunters on WMA’s.

>Let's look at the three point rule; will this raise
>the harvest rate? will this raise the herd numbers?

>Will this rule bring hunters back to florida?

No I don’t think it will raise the harvest rate, and the first year it will lower the harvest rate. After that it should be about the same, and yes you will see an increase in horns and weight. Your guess is as good as mine on whether it will bring back hunters.

>how about the quota system: Non-transferable versus
>Treansferable, What can be done or will this in and of
>itself bring the hunters back?

This is not the only change that is coming. By itself it will probable have only a small effect.

>More land: we are getting more land open every year,
>not open year round and they're small parcels but non
>the less more land!

I agree we are getting some new area’s, but we also keep losing some, so overall were not gaining much, and as you said most have very limited hunting. This is one point we all agree on. We need more access to the lands we now have.

>More Opurtunities: Youth hunts, Family hunts, hog only
>hunts, Special hog hunts also, The FWC youth hunt is
>in full swing also...

The Family hunts and Youth Hunts are great. But without buck in the woods how many are going to keep hunting? As far as the hog hunts go, most are being done to eliminate the hogs. In my opinion this is stupid. No only will we not have many deer on the WMA’s we won’t have any hogs either.

>The FWC harvest rate for WMAs are out for last year,

>should be about that, not something that is wishful

So what are your suggestions to bring up the population? The only options I’ve seen is better habitat management, bag limits and antler restriction. From what I’ve been told the only habitat management that most of use will see is some burning and that’s already being done. So now we are down to decreasing the harvest. No of us wants that, but sometimes things have to get worst before they get better.

>Those hunters who want to shot eight points or better
>can do that with or without a change, making the
>comment that they have to shot the spike that walks by
>because someone else might is BS thinking and more of
>a winners atitude! If i want meat in my freezer not
>horns on my mantle I should be able to do that also!

BS thinking, I don’t think so. That’s reality. Most hunters are going to shoot the deer if they think someone else will. This is the big problem with a lot of hunters in Florida, they think they should be able to shoot what ever walks by and as many as they like. Most do not want to give up anything to make the hunting better for future generations.

>As for any changes, yes we need a few, but it's for
>the betterment of both hunter and deer, if we as
>hunters and stakeholders can find a way to do that
>then I'm for it but to make a change just for
>guestimation, hell no! We're along way from having the
>RIGHT answer i think!

You’re a long way form having the right answer, because there is no one size that fit’s all when it comes to deer hunting. What we know now is that most are not happy with the way things are, and they want to see some changes.

>By the way, hunting license sales are down accross the
>country, so it's not just about Florida!

Yes it’s all about Florida, because that’s were we hunt!
