Nikita looked over her shoulder as the breakfast bell rang. She didn’t get much sleep last night and even after a long hot bath, her cramps kept her up. Nikita moved up the stairs to the medical building and turned the knob to find that Davenport had already opened the door. He often had to pass out morning medicine to the girls.
Swallowing hard, Nikita heard the bell ring as she stepped in and she saw the small light on in the room off to the side of the entrance. She looked down to her feet and then jerked as she saw Kate walk out.
There was a woman who was clearly pregnant. She was wearing a pair of khaki shorts that fell below the growing stomach and a black tank top that she was now easily filling out. “Hi, Nikita… What are you here for? Someone hurt? Sick?”
“I was hoping that I could talk to Davenport real fast this morning,” Nikita rubbed her lower back as she tried not to stare at Kate’s stomach.
“You look tired,” Kate commented as she reached over and picked up the cordless phone. Nikita waited as Kate called Davenport and informed him that Nikita was down there. “Thanks for doing that, Kate.”
“Cramps?” Kate inquired and Nikita exhaled and nodded her head. “I sometimes get them bad… just really rough this time.”
“Mine would be really bad after too much physical activity… you know,” Kate admitted with a shrug of her shoulders. Nikita folded her hands and looked to the side. “Are you waiting for any girls?”
“Nah… they came thru about ten minutes ago… but Davenport has a few interviews to help out on his practice side,” Kate revealed as she reached over and opened up the small gate that separated this waiting area and the space were there were two rooms that Davenport used often for the camp. “Davenport was just eating some eggs… I can’t stand the smell of them right now… no matter that all other morning sickness is gone… the smell of eggs just makes my insides curl up.”
“How are you feeling?” Nikita forced herself to ask as she was truly happy for Kate and Davenport. Nikita would never hold it against them that they got pregnant so easily. Nikita felt a headache growing strong but she hoped that it was only because she was with Kate right now.
“I am good in the morning… I hate to admit it that I leave Davenport with a ton of work in the afternoon…. I tend to fall asleep after lunch… and then I get a second wind for dinner and most of the evening,” Kate explained as she walked to the first room and flipped the switch on. “Of course, I never thought that my nights would be busier than before… but Davenport really likes my stomach… and other things.”
Nikita coughed and blinked her eyes. “Oh…”
“And I have found that I don’t have much of a censor on my mouth,” Kate nervously laughed. “He says that it is different for each woman who is pregnant.”
“I wouldn’t know,” Nikita coolly spoke and Kate shook her head. “I am happy to be having this child… but I would have much rather had gotten married… and settled... and some time with Davenport alone before having it… but I love this little boy…”
“Boy?” Nikita inquired and Kate dropped her head. “Oops… we weren’t telling anyone.”
“But you know?” Nikita asked and Kate nodded her head up and down. “I didn’t want to find out… but Davenport can read sonograms and such so I knew that it would be impossible for him not to tell… so I decided to find out.”
Nikita stepped into the room as she heard the door from upstairs close. Nikita went to the examination table and sat on it. “I’m happy for you, Kate.”
“Yeah, I’ll get to know all the tricks for whenever you get pregnant,” Kate winked as she stepped back into the hallway as Davenport turned into the room. “What can I do for you, Nikita? You could have just called.”
“I was out for a walk,” Nikita spoke and Davenport lifted his head. He had been in the mess hall when things happened yesterday and he noted that a lot of the adults were missing from dinner last night, including Nikita and Michael. She looked exhausted, withdrawn, and a bit pale. “You look like you should be sleeping and not out for a walk.”
Nikita felt her head throbbing more and she rubbed her head. It was while Nikita was doing that time that Davenport actually shut the door and took away his casual manner. “Nikita?”
Nikita lifted her head and sighed. “I started my period yesterday and the cramps are a bit stronger than I have had in a long time… and they kept me up… and I know that what I did yesterday was wrong… and I couldn’t stop thinking about it… and how I can’t make up to anyone about what I did… and I just am really sore…”
“Are you bleeding heavier than normal?” Davenport inquired as he stepped closer to Nikita and took her hand into his. Nikita didn’t realize that he was checking her heart rate as she shook her head from side to side. “It never is really heavy, Davenport… it’s the normal stuff… and I do get cramps like most women.”
“Was it late arriving?” Davenport asked as he dropped Nikita’s hand after pressing her fingernails and watching the recall of the blood to the tip of her fingers.
“Actually a day early,” Nikita rasped as she looked down to the floor. “Can I just get something stronger than Motrin? Just this one time.”
“You weren’t using protection…” Davenport spoke as he walked to the counter and Nikita looked at him. “Yes, Michael and I were trying to become pregnant. I had my period. So what does the protection matter?”
“Have you passed more than just blood?” Davenport asked and Nikita shook her head from side to side. “No… Davenport, this isn’t a miscarriage. I was never pregnant so this is just my period.”
“I have to ask, Nikita. I’m the doctor,” Davenport reminded Nikita as he walked back to her and pulled out his stethoscope from his drawer. “You are really agitated… and your heart rate is a bit fast… Why don’t you take a deep breath for me?”
Nikita pushed Davenport’s hand away and closed her eyes. “Please, Davenport… I just want some relief… and to get some sleep…”
Davenport frowned as he stood there. He watched as Nikita cupped her head again and he dropped the stethoscope. “Nikita, you are trying to become pregnant and unfortunately it is common for a miscarriage to be missed as just a normal menstruation cycle.”
Nikita leaned her head back and blinked back tears. “I didn’t get pregnant this month. I thought it was meant to happen while on the honeymoon… I haven’t slept well since we got back and I haven’t been exercising I normally do… that is why I have cramps like this…”
Davenport grabbed a few tissues and handed them to Nikita. He watched her and moved to adjust the examination table. “Lean back… close your eyes… I have some Tylenol with codeine… that should help with the cramps and hopefully stop your headache from becoming a migraine…”
Nikita wanted to say that she didn’t need to lean back, but she was sure that Davenport wasn’t going to give her the medicine. Nikita leaned back but pulled her legs up to her stomach. The door closed and opened again quickly.
“Here… try the heating pad…. And I have Kate warming a towel for your head…” Davenport directed Nikita as he stood beside her. Nikita took the heating pad out of Davenport’s hands and placed it on her pelvis area, practically wanting to shove it inside where her cramps throbbed. She saw that he then held out the pill and had a glass of water.
“I should go back home…” Nikita spoke and Davenport walked over and turned the light off. “It should be quiet here for a while… and I never have given you codeine so I’ll make sure that you don’t have a reaction to it…”
The door opened and Davenport took the hot compress for Nikita’s head out of Kate’s hands. He pulled out a pillow and lowered the back of the examination table some more before putting the pillow behind Nikita’s head. “Do you want me to call Michael?”
“He has to work on the house…” Nikita spoke and Davenport nodded his head. “Close your eyes… the medicine will take maybe thirty minutes to an hour to help… ok?”
Nikita nodded her head as she did still groan with the cramps. Davenport turned and walked out of the room. He closed the door and Kate stood there with the portable phone in her hand. “I called Michael… he wants to talk to you.”
