Jasmine looked across the clearing and saw Michael making his way around the camp. He had arrived at the camp after the show at lunch between Nikita, Oak, and Carla, and hadn’t been seen since. She turned to the side and started to cross towards him.
Michael had been around the camp twice tonight, needing to make sure that things were settled and needing a break from the apartment. He had seen Jasmine and wanted her to just continue on. He stopped and leaned against a tree while Jasmine headed towards him. “You should just continue on.”
“I wanted to let you know that I’ll take care of the girls tonight. You don’t need to do this any longer,” Jasmine spoke as she stood right in front of Michael. She had changed a lot in a year. Last year, Jasmine would have just listened to Michael and not counter what he had said.
“I needed to walk for a while,” Michael admitted as he looked passed Jasmine. He shoved his hands into his black jeans. “Have you seen Oak and Carla?”
“Well, they aren’t together,” Jasmine retorted as she placed a hand on her hip. She rolled her shoulders back. The camp was pretty down after what had happened this afternoon but Jasmine didn’t need to tell Michael that. “Neither of them showed up for dinner.”
“Damn,” Michael hissed as he shook his head back and forth. “We have to make sure that they make it to the camp fire tomorrow.”
“And Nikita?” Jasmine asked and Michael rolled his eyes while shaking his head negatively from side to side. “I can’t talk… its difficult Jasmine. But once Nikita realizes that the girls saw all of that… she won’t go…”
“It’s good that none of the girls are coming back next week… a few will be back later in the summer but they’ll probably forget what happened,” Jasmine spoke and Michael blinked his eyes. He hadn’t even thought about what Jasmine was saying but it was so important.
Jasmine glanced at her watch and stepped back slightly. “I’ve got my eyes out at the newest site… the older girls are there… I might have to corral them again…”
Michael nodded his head. He had noticed that also.
“Walter is camping out for some reason tonight,” Jasmine looked over her shoulder towards where Walter had set up a couple hours ago. Michael had noticed it too but he hadn’t headed in that direction. Jasmine paused and looked at Michael. “He has a chess board out. I’d hate to think that he is playing himself tonight.”
Jasmine disappeared from Michael’s vision quicker than he wanted to admit. He leaned against the tree as he listened to the silence of the night. In ways he wanted to talk to Walter and in other ways, he was afraid to talk to Walter.
Yet, Michael knew that he had to go to Walter. It had been clear for hours, no matter how much Michael tried to talk himself out of the meeting with Walter. He looked at the tent as he walked towards it and sighed. “I thought you took all the solar power out of here when you moved back to your house with Belinda.”
“I have my secrets,” Walter reached over and pulled out a beer for Michael. Michael looked at the beverage and sat down. He reached over and moved his pawn before opening up the bottle. “You lost last time, buddy!”
“Does it matter?” Michael asked after taking a sip. Walter smirked and made his move. The two moved several times before Walter rolled his shoulders back and sighed. “So Nikita isn’t pregnant, is she?”
“That would be correct,” Michael stated as he pretended to be studying the board for his next move.
“Nikita must be very upset,” Walter stated something that obvious.
“Yep,” Michael nodded his head as he made a move and was sure that Walter was going to find a way to win right away.
“And you… you are relieved,” Walter slowly spoke as he tipped over his queen and focused right on Michael. Michael lifted his hands at the board. “You weren’t going to lose… three moves and you had me in check.”
“I have you in check mate with what I had just said, Michael,” Walter retorted as he leaned forward and stared at the young man. “You want a family… but you didn’t want her pregnant right away.”
Michael pushed back and took a long drink on his beer before dropping the empty bottle to his feet. “You would have been right… this afternoon.”
Michael shifted and crossed his legs while he finally focused on Walter. “She wanted it so badly, Walter. And it’s like… it’s like it killed part of her today.”
“For today,” Walter spoke and he sighed. “But she’ll get over it and someday she will be so happy that it didn’t happen right away.”
Michael shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know, Walter.”
“Well, you two can practice some more… and we all know that when it happens, she is going to be a great mother,” Walter reached out and grabbed two more beers. He watched as Michael opened his and took a sip. “Belinda is going to have surgery not this Monday… but the following Monday.”
“What?” Michael questioned as he blinked his eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“She doesn’t want to tell anyone… they say that it is going to be fine… but it’s a full hysterectomy… and I just don’t know, Michael. I just got her in my life,” Walter shook his head from side to side. “She would smack me for telling you.”
“Is she planning on not telling anyone?” Michael inquired as he folded his hands and leaned forward. He didn’t understand why these women in their lives were making things so much more difficult than it needed to be.
“Before the next session starts to arrive… but that’s because I’m forcing her to tell them… and I’ll need some time off,” Walter explained as he pulled out a box to start putting the chess board away. “I’m out here tonight because I won’t be able to come out afterwards… not for a while.”
“Take as much time as you need,” Michael offered as he rubbed his forehead. “Why won’t she tell us sooner? Obviously she has been having something happening…”
“She didn’t tell me until they told her that she needed surgery,” Walter spat out. He sighed and shook his head again. “But then… you don’t want to tell Nikita that you are happy that she isn’t pregnant yet… and I don’t want to tell Belinda that I need to keep people about what is going on with her so I can have support…”
“You say it like that… and it just points out we are all… we all have something messed up inside of us,” Michael closed his eyes as he stared down at the ground. “I just don’t want to hurt Nikita telling her… and she would be hurt. No matter how well I try to explain things.”
“Can you truly not tell her?”
