Carla walked up the stairs and stopped as Nikita stepped out of Walter’s and Belinda’s house. “Hi, Nikita.”
“Hi,” Nikita smiled as she turned and held the door open. “Belinda just settled down in the living room… she taught me how to make biscuits.”
Carla laughed as she could see that Nikita had been baking, there was flour all over her. “Are you sure that you know how to bake biscuits now?”
“I’m sure that I shouldn’t be allowed alone with flour… I think the only biscuits I should be allowed to make should come out of the refrigerated section of the grocery store.”
Carla laughed. She couldn’t believe how much she had grown to like Nikita since Belinda had her surgery three weeks ago. Nikita had been in some sort of odd mood that first week, but since then, she had been fun to get along with. Nikita looked around and shrugged her shoulders. “I know, I should stick to writing.”
“We have to do what we are best at… Belinda is going to attempt to teach me out to crochet…” Carla spoke and Nikita rolled her eyes. “How did you get time away from camp?”
“Oak asked to take care of the stable and the girls this afternoon. I am going to do the night feeding instead,” Carla announced and Nikita blinked her eyes. She thought that Oak was happy doing the things without the girls around. Carla stepped in closer. “I think that Hunter is back.”
“Oh…” Nikita whispered as she nodded her head. “That makes sense… and thank you for doing that for him.”
“I thought it would be nice for Belinda too. Walter said that she was getting stir crazy,” Carla commented as Nikita rolled her eyes. Belinda just was sick of sitting and watching television. She complained about soap operas and she hated game shows. But yet, she couldn’t seem to finish reading one book and Walter had to threaten to take the phone away from the house when he found out that she was calling the flower shop to check in on things.
“I got to go… I have one more page to write and get it sent to Michelle,” Nikita glanced at her watch and started down the stairs. Carla wasn’t sure how Nikita worked and how she just seemed to not write anything for weeks and then suddenly became a writing machine. For at least the last ten days, including the previous weekend, Nikita had been writing up a storm in every spare moment that she had.
“Belinda… I’m here…” Carla called out as she entered the house and closed the door. She turned and leaned against the doorway as Belinda had already pulled out the bag of supplies that she had sent Carla for the previous day when Carla asked her to teach her out to crochet. “Can you get my bottle of water? I left it in the kitchen…”
Carla went off to the kitchen while the phone rang. She heard Belinda pick it up and she looked around the kitchen to see that Nikita had cleaned it almost spotless. There was no evidence of Nikita’s misadventures in baking and that was good thing. She knew that Nikita wouldn’t have left a mess, but Belinda may have told her to just leave it. Belinda was stubborn, something that everyone was learning very well.
Grabbing the bottle, Carla stopped at the refrigerator to grab some Crystal Light and then headed towards the living room. Belinda had her head turned as she was talking on the phone. “I’ll schedule that appointment right away…”
Carla blinked her eyes as she thought that Belinda was done with appointments for a couple weeks. “Of course I’ll bring my husband with me. I’ll call back tomorrow.”
Carla sat down and pulled at the bag as Belinda placed the phone down. “I put your water on the coffee table…”
As Carla pulled out the yarn, she turned to look at Belinda while asking, “Is this what I need to start with?”
Belinda had her face filled with tears. She swallowed hard and tried to stop the tears. “Ah… can this wait… for another day?”
“What’s wrong?” Carla asked and Belinda jerked her head away. She rubbed her hands to her face. She then looked at Carla. “During the surgery… they take samples to test… they took twenty five samples… and two of them came back cancerous…”
“Oh Belinda…” Carla stood up and hugged her around her arms. “We are going to get you thru this….”
“I have to go see them soon… to talk about treatments… they believe in aggressive treatment… chemo… radiation…” Belinda rubbed her hands together and then pulled away from Carla. “Please don’t tell anyone else.”
“They will want to help you…”
“I want to see the doctor first… hear how bad it truly is…” Belinda explained as she twisted her hands together. Carla sat down and touched Belinda’s knees. “Let me go get Walter.”
“He has the next two days off… I won’t pull him from dinner tonight…”
“I think this is more important,” Carla spoke and Belinda squeezed her eyes shut tightly. She took Carla’s hand. “I don’t want to be alone right now.”
“Then let me call,” Carla suggested as she looked at the phone. Belinda nodded her head up and down. “Don’t tell him.”
“He’ll know that it is not good, Belinda,” Carla warned and Belinda swallowed hard. “But I need him…”
“I’m calling,” Carla spoke as she started to dial. She felt awful for Belinda. She didn’t deserve this. She had been bouncing back so quickly from the surgery and had seemed ready to fight the doctors to get back on her feet faster. Carla also knew that Walter wasn’t going to be the only person crushed by this news.
