Nat sat down at the computer at the station and paused. He was thinking back to his meeting with Michael Pomeroy a few days ago. He thought that after the call he had gotten the previous night that he wanted to talk about the angel, but instead Michael Pomeroy had asked him about Joe.
He had been busy with the police recruits the previous day so he did not have time to think about it. It probably had slipped his mind also because Joe had been missing from the convent yesterday. Rhoda had said that not long after his visit she had left and not returned yet.
Today, after being called to give another police station some information about the angel, which wasn’t much, Nat found himself thinking back to that conversation and realizing that outside of the work that Michael Pomeroy did for the police department, he did not really know the man.
Finally, Nat started to do his research. He wanted to find something about Michael Pomeroy and he started to delve into the information. But as he worked, Nat leaned back and felt like he was reading a sanitized document about this man.
“Lieutenant McCarty, there is a woman here to see you,” one of his fellow officers spoke as Nat was studying the screen, feeling as if he was almost reading a book. He turned and saw Sister Rhoda standing out in the hallway. He stood and waved for her to enter. “What are you doing here, Sister? Did something happen at the convent?”
“No,” Rhoda shook her head slightly from side to side. “Joe disappeared again.”
Nat swallowed hard. He felt so guilty for bringing those police recruits around. “I’m sorry…”
“I thought that by now I would be used to her disappearing. She had done it a lot of times. But now, each time she disappears, I get more scared,” Rhoda twisted her hands together. Nat looked at the side chair next to his desk and pulled the papers off of it. “Sit down…”
“Mr. Pomeroy hasn’t come up with anything. I know that he is busy… I had just hoped…” Rhoda shook her head from side to side. “There is something about her, Nat.”
“I know,” Nat agreed as he flicked his computer screen off. “But I did warn you that Michael Pomeroy does get really busy with things.”
“I thought he understood how important it is for me to find this out… how it could mean Joe’s life,” Rhoda’s voice cracked. Nat tilted his head to the side. “Rhoda?”
“I found a bloody set of clothes that I know that were Joe’s. I don’t know what happens when she is gone. I fear that she just is in something that I don’t want to think about,” Rhoda rasped as she found it hard to think about it.
“How did you find the clothes?” Nat inquired and Rhoda jerked her head away. She was not pleased with herself for going through Joe’s things, but she just wanted to do something to help the young woman. “Reverend Mother…”
“Stop that,” Rhoda reprimanded Nat immediately. “I’m conflicted about how I feel about what I did. But I had to do it, Nat.”
Nat leaned back and sighed. “Mr. Pomeroy must be working on Joe’s case. He called me over a few days ago to ask me some more questions about her. He is pulling back on some other cases right now, but he does honor all the cases that he has taken on.”
“He called you? Why?”
“He knows that I told you contact him,” Nat explained as he reached over and took Rhoda’s hands. “And you can’t worry about what Joe decides to do with her life. You are trying your best, but you aren’t responsible for her decisions. She is an adult.”
“She is hurt.”
“Yes,” Nat agreed as he nodded his head up and down. “But Rhoda, you aren’t her mother. You are trying to be her friend and she is making it really hard. It will work out however it is meant to work out.”
Rhoda stood up and nodded her head up and down. “Thank you.”
“Why don’t you wait a bit? I have to finish something up here and we can go get some coffee. We can talk about something other than Joe,” Nat suggested as he smiled at Rhoda. She was so dedicated to figuring out how to help Joe that she wasn’t allowing herself to think about other things.
Rhoda sighed as she turned slightly red. “I have been a bit obsessed.”
“Give me five minutes,” Nat directed and finally Rhoda nodded her head up and down. “I’ll be outside.”
“I won’t be long,” Nat stated as he watched Rhoda turned out of the office. He looked around and narrowed his eyes as one of his coworkers whistled. It wasn’t necessary. Rhoda was a woman of the cloth!
Nat flicked on the computer screen to look at the information about Michael Pomeroy when it suddenly turned off. Nat leaned over and tried to get the computer to work again, but it was dead. Nat groaned and picked up the phone to call tech support. They indicated that no one would be able to look at it for at least a day.
Hanging up the phone, Nat realized that he had to take his own advice and to get away from everything related to Michael Pomeroy, the angel, and his cases in general. He needed to have a bit of a life away from the police department. Shoving his keys into his pocket, he exited the office, going down to meet with Rhoda.
