Adam walked down the street and looked across the traffic. Just a couple blocks away was the convent that they were all sure that Nikita was staying at by telling people that her name was Joe. Adam didn’t have to ask his father, Walter, Jason or Davenport about her now using the name of Joe. They all thought it was a nod towards her codename of Josephine.

He was to be in school, but he had skipped out of the last class, which was just Physical Education to come in this direction. He had told his father that he wouldn’t try to see Nikita, but Adam just wanted to see that she was alive. Adam did not think that Nikita would know him from any other kid running around.

Getting to the light, Adam was about to cross the street when two hands come down on his shoulders. Adam tried to turn and kick at his attacker at the same time, but instead he heard a chuckle and then the gray hair of Walter’s. He leaned his head back and groaned. “Walter…”

“Neither of us are to be here right now, Adam… Come on,” Walter directed Adam away from the corner and away from the convent. Walter continued to march with Adam and finally came to an old Ford Taurus and opened a door for Adam to get into.

Dropping his bag to the seat behind him, Adam knew that he was busted and he wasn’t going to talk his way out of this one. “I just wanted to see her.”

“All of us want to see her,” Walter stated as he slipped into the driver’s seat and started the car smoothly. It may look old on the outside, but it ran like it was brand new. Walter started to drive out of the neighborhood and finally looked at Adam as they stopped at a red light. “Probably is that no one has seen her. She likes to disappear for a while and I guess before Davenport and his partner could get eyes on her, she had disappeared.”

“She took down that loan shark last night,” Adam commented as he pulled out the paper from his jeans’ pocket. “The loan shark was about to cut off some woman’s fingers…. He was found with his fingers all attached to metal threads with some sort of cutting device above them…. I think it was too kind.”

Walter started to drive as the traffic started to move away. “What it means is that we don’t know where Nikita is right now. If she saw me… she could run… We don’t know. It is possible that she knows that we know and she has gone on the run again, Adam.”

“No,” Adam swung his head from side to side. “She is here for my dad.”

“Things are usually never what we want to see,” Walter stated as he pulled into a restaurant’s parking lot and stepped out. “Come on… let’s get something to eat…”

“At Hardees?”

“I need one of their Frisco Thickburgers,” Walter defended his decision. The two waited until they had their food and they sat down before talking again. Walter looked around and smirked. “I remember the time I took Sugar to Hardees. We were on some rink-a-dink mission… I think they just wanted to get her away from Michael to see what your father would do… She had a kid’s meal because she would used to go to fast food restaurants with money that she got on the streets and get the kids meal…”

Adam blinked his eyes and Walter leaned forward. “As I said, Adam… things aren’t always what they seem.”

“I get that,” Adam rolled his eyes. Walter groaned. “Look… your father is dealing with this too. Do you know how many times Michael thought he saw Davenport killed? Do you know how many times he thought I was killed? He knows that things aren’t always the way they seem. That is what is really going on here, Adam. Things may not be the way they seem with Nikita.”

“She isn’t on a mission!” Adam declared as he huffed. Walter waited and as Adam finally started to eat his fries again, Walter rubbed his neck. He chewed on his burger for a while and then cleared his throat. “I almost hope that she is on a mission, Adam.”

“Why?”

“Because I am scared that if things are the way that they seem… that means my Sugar is really hurting. She has done enough that she shouldn’t have to hurt…. She had to make the most difficult decisions before she got me out… She was deciding who was going to live and who was going to die… She was trying to find something good in every single person… and sometimes that wasn’t possible. Those decisions were probably easy for her… but some others… I hope that what has her there… not talking… I pray that it is for a mission – for some sort of greater outcome,” Walter rasped as he then shook his head and bit into his burger. “She would kill me for having this burger.”

Adam just looked at Walter, chilled by his passionate explanation of why he hoped that Nikita was in play on something right now. It had also chilled Adam because he thought Nikita was there just waiting for his father to find her. That she would magically go back to being Nikita after his father got her.

“Why? Are you not to have burgers?” Adam finally asked and Walter chuckled. “Yeah… something like that…”

“I could see her,” Adam attempted and Walter lifted a finger and swung it from side to side. “Oh no…. you may not see it, Adam… But she would know that you were Michael’s son instantly.”

“I hate waiting,” Adam huffed and Walter nodded his head. “We all hate waiting. Your father is just the best at hiding the fact that he hates waiting.”

They finished their meal and Adam pushed the door open to go back to the car. “I won’t tell anyone about us stopping here if you don’t tell them about me being… close…”

Walter opened the door and rolled his eyes. “I’m not to be in the area too, Adam. I’d just be telling on myself.”

“I thought they asked you to follow me.”

“No,” Walter shook his head from side to side. “But seeing you so close reminded me what was the right thing to do.”
