“You never told me how Nikita got here… hurt…” Walter spoke as he sat on the bed across from Michael’s, knowing that it was late and knowing that this might be the only time he could get this information from Michael. He had tried once but got nothing as a nurse walked into the room. At least for the time being, they would be left alone.

Michael turned his head and looked to the floor. “Please, Walter…”

“I can tell that she wasn’t shot… and I know that it was some sort of head trauma…”

“I don’t like thinking about what happened.”

“But I want to know,” Walter gently said. “I want to know if somehow she was hurt because of Section.”

“No,” Michael shook his head. “She was walking with Merrill Hubert… and she saw the child in the street…”

“Who?” Walter leaned slightly with a frown on his face. “Merrill?”

“An associate of Adrian’s.”

Walter sat up more while shaking his head. “Operations and Madeline eliminated Adrian.”

“Just like they did with Birkoff,” Michael retorted quickly as he shifted, realizing that he wasn’t going to get out of this. But he promised himself broad strokes of truth. There was no way that Michael could easily unravel the myriad of truths and lies that were perpetuated to make this happen. And for the times that Nikita was in risk, it was a shopping trip for something to meet up with Michael that she had been on when she got hurt.

Walter could feel a headache and he also felt that Michael was purposely getting him off track. “How did she get hurt?”

Michael tilted his head to look at Walter. “I didn’t know at first… and I didn’t care at first… not when they were talking about being brain dead… saying that the thought that her spinal cord was damaged… I didn’t know the details… I just knew that it wasn’t Operations or Madeline.”

“How do you know that?”

“They are dead,” Michael shook his head. “I thought that you trusted that information.”

“Not everyone who is dead is dead.”

“They are,” Michael seethed and Walter jerked his head up and down. He could see the truth was being said with every fiber of Michael’s being. “Adrian… she didn’t know about Nikita and myself… she came back into the mix to prove things had to change… she was out to make a connection with me because of Elena and Adam.”

“And instead she found you and Nikita,” Walter sighed and leaned back.

“It was a mess when I arrived at that hospital, Walter… everyone was talking to me at one time... Merrill and Adrian were there… they were on my side and they made people listen to me… but then they backed off when I told everyone that I needed space…” Michael rasped as he leaned his head back and stared at the ceiling. “I don’t know if it was hours... or days… it just didn’t seem to be quick enough for people to let me think… to feel what Nikita would want… and to be with her…”

Michael could still see the hospital door to the ICU room open up and all of the equipment that was crammed around the bed. “I know that if they hadn’t been there… while I was in Section… trying to be there for you and others… she would have been pronounced… they wouldn’t have done anything more… even though she got hurt saving a four year old girl who had stepped in front of a moving bus…”

“God…”

“We used to joke… if Section didn’t kill us… we’d get hit by a bus… and she did,” Michael’s voice broke as he looked at Walter. “Adrian has pulled the strings to keep the story out of the media… the family of the girl keep on trying to reach out and try to help… they wanted to come in and thank her… and do fundraising… and I just know that we can’t have that.”

Michael stopped and continued to stare up at the ceiling, just focusing on not seeing those first moments, how little of Nikita’s body he recognized. But her hair. Although covered in some blonde still. But a good bit of it was gone. Somehow it had grown quickly.

Her face was hidden and when bandages came off the first time with Michael in the room, he swore that most of her head was one black bruise.

Walter felt awful as he could see the tears rolling down Michael’s face. He must have held back so much for such a long time. But Walter didn’t have words. He knew that his words didn’t matter to Michael. They probably weren’t words that Michael hadn’t thought himself while he sat as Nikita's guardian in the hospital as much as he could. He hated to hear how simple it sounded. Saving a child got Nikita hurt. It was something that was so her. It was no stretch to hear that she did that.

The stretch was everything else that Walter was finding out that Nikita did while she was on the outside of Section One.
