Michael eased into the cabin and entered the code into the security system before slipping into the darkness of the bedroom. Usually Nikita would already be sitting up in bed if she was there first, but not this time. With a bedside lamp on, she was asleep with her arms curled under the pillow, propping her head up. Michael frowned as he bent down and then saw the lump on Nikita’s forehead.

He had seen her in that macabre of torture that was a mixture of the movies Water World and Fight Club. He pushed the hair away from her face and saw that it was more than a lump on her forehead as it seemed to arch all the way down the side of her face.

He must have put too much pressure on the bruise as Nikita winced and pulled away. “Why did you have to touch it?”

“Why did you even have to be there?” Michael rasped as he shook his head as he sat down on the floor to study Nikita’s face as her eyes opened up.

“That operative… she would have died in the tank… she didn’t because…” Nikita drifted off and swallowed hard. “I had a preliminary match the night before… wore down her opponent…”

Michael closed his eyes and he jerked when he felt Nikita’s hand on his face. “You were at risk… you didn’t see the guns trained on you… things could have gotten a lot worse, Michael.”

“You could have not been there, Kita,” Michael took Nikita’s hand and kissed it. She shrugged her shoulders slightly. “I got out of work for a week.”

Michael sighed and leaned his head down on the bed. Nikita looked over her shoulder. “There is a whole bed for you to share. You have a couple days, right?”

“A few,” Michael nodded his head up and down and Nikita looked at him. “Then why are you down there and not in bed with me?”

“I like looking into your eyes… seeing your face… when you aren’t across a room in danger… in a place that you aren’t supposed to be. This is where you are to be,” Michael sighed as he didn’t move. He watched as Nikita smiled gently even with the injury. He knew that in a couple hours she would be much better, but until then, he just wanted to protect her.

Michael had thought of that night so often while he was sitting beside the bed, waiting for Nikita to heal enough to come back to him. He knew that it was not something that he should do as he wasn’t ensured that Nikita would wake up, but Michael couldn’t stop himself. Nikita was going to be fine. She had been thru enough and this was going to be their time.

But there were other times that Michael sat there, looking at her face, fearing that she would never open her eyes. And there were plenty of times that he had fallen asleep to dream of her waking up, or worse, dying. He would jerk awake, often with one of the nurses beside him, telling him immediately that everything was ok and that Nikita was as she had been.
Walter had been the most recent person to see it happen and had suggested that Michael go for a walk – outside the hospital. Michael wouldn’t go because Nikita had been saying his name more frequently. That was a fact that no one could deny. But it was something that Michael knew that he would have to do sooner than later.

He rolled his shoulders back and closed his eyes while taking a long deep breath.

“Michael,” the voice was almost clear and Michael snapped his green eyes open, finding Nikita’s blue eyes looking at him, not brightly looking at him and glazed over in some level of pain, but they were focused on him. Michael pinched his arm and then he felt Walter moving into the room, so he knew that it wasn’t a dream or his imagination.

“I’m here, Kita,” Michael’s voice cracked as he clutched the bed.

Her eyes fluttered closed and Michael was afraid that it was just going to be his name. But with a couple tries, she opened them again. “I… saw… him…”

Michael shook his head and looked around. “Get her some water…” Walter nodded his head and Nikita closed her eyes while slowly licking her lips. There was more pain in her gaze as the eyes opened again. “I… saw him… he… saw me…”

Confused, Michael reached out to Nikita’s cheek and stroked it. “Who?”

Nikita was struggling and Michael swallowed as she focused on him more. He could see that her mind was saying so much more than what was coming out of her mouth.

“Him.”

Michael shook his head and then stopped. He sat up a bit straighter as he realized what Nikita was trying to tell him. One of their last times together they had gone over the plan and Nikita kept on telling Michael that she was going to see Operations face-to-face, so he would be able to tell that he had never won one over her. Michael didn’t want her to do it. He felt that it was an unnecessary risk but Nikita told Michael that she had to do it.

“Operations?” Michael asked and he could then hear the water that Walter was pouring drop and splash over the floor.

“Not happy,” Nikita whispered with a slight smile on her lips as she closed her eyes. She groaned as she shifted her head slightly. “Hurt.”

“I’m going to get the nurse… the doctor…” Walter declared as he eased out of the room. Michael leaned forwarded and pulled his hand away from Nikita’s face. “You are going to hurt for a while, Kita…”

But there was no response and Michael felt the balloon of happiness that had started to float inside of him deflate slightly. That hadn’t been nearly long enough. And she had spoken about Operations. It wasn’t fair!

Needing to focus on the good, Michael closed his eyes against his disappointment and focused on the fact that she had spoken his name. She remembered him. Better yet, she remembered pretty much up to the accident that had brought her into this room.
