It may not have been the best day to make the decision that Nikita needed to get out of the room but Michael realized that as he was carrying Nikita down the stairs. It was as two of the construction members walked down the hallway, pulling out a sink. Michael paused on the bottom step as Mick hurried behind them. “We need this job done, guys… so you can get back over to the next project.”

Michael frowned as Mick stopped and smiled. “Popsicle… I didn’t mean for them to get in the way…”

“I thought that they were to be done in that bathroom, Mick,” Michael spoke as he didn’t move to set Nikita down. She had her arms wrapped around his neck but she didn’t seem to be holding on strongly. He wasn’t sure if Nikita would be able to stand at this point. She did really need to eat.

“I am pushing them… but we also want the job done right. We don’t want to have to end up on a show like that Holmes on Homes… and we did push a tight timeframe and some of the supplies have been held up,” Mick explained as he shook his head. “I have more of them coming to start up over at Walter’s place. He would kill me… well… I guess either of you… well… you know…”

“I didn’t know that we had a bathroom down here,” Nikita spoke as she blinked her eyes.

“There wasn’t,” Mick declared and Nikita looked at Michael. “You didn’t need to put a bathroom down here because of me.”

“I didn’t,” Michael kissed Nikita’s forehead. “I don’t think we want to have guests traipsing around upstairs… even with our in suite bathroom and the shared one… it will be easier to have all of these people using a bathroom down here.”

“Wait,” Mick snapped his fingers. “You never did get the tour… and some things have changed… Come…” Mick started to walk and Michael looked at Nikita. She was interested and she needed to get a lay of the land again. “Well... outside are the large porches… they don’t really connect… I don’t know if you realized that… but that will be fixed in the spring… it’s really just the corners missing… and a little section… by summer, if Michael doesn’t fight me too much, the porch will surround the house.”

“As long as Birkoff can secure it,” Michael commented and Mick rolled his eyes as he turned on some lights. “This is the main living room…. There has been some delay in the supplies for the fireplace in the corner…”

Nikita swallowed. “It was a security hazard?”

“Safety hazard,” Michael corrected and Mick chuckled. “It was falling down in the middle of the room… and we haven’t done much in here… yet…. And these pocket doors open up… to the dining room.”

Nikita groaned. It was very dark in the room and Mick turned with a determined look on his face. “I told you that she wasn’t going to like this room… and we really should put in those French doors when we fix the porch. With the other changes of opening up this room, it will help keep it light.”

“And a better floor plan… except for the doors,” Michael shifted Nikita in his arms and turned around to go back thru the living room and to the hallway. “You’ll like this other side better… all of the furniture in the other two rooms came with the place… we aren’t keeping it.”

“But I did get this room taken care of… the casual living room… of sorts,” Mick stepped forward and turned on the lights. Nikita blinked her eyes as she saw the recliner. “That’s where I was when we came here.”

“Yep,” Michael nodded his head as it was clear that Nikita approved of this comfortable room. They had to exit the room and go back to the hallway to see another room that was right behind the front room. Mick wanted to open up the walls but Michael wasn’t so sure about that. Nikita blinked as Mick was chattering how the next room could be converted into an office.

“It’s a library,” Nikita spoke as she saw the built in shelves. “You can’t change this room.”

Michael smiled at Mick and tilted his head without gloating. Mick hadn’t thought of that Nikita would keep it this way but Michael knew. Clearing his throat, they soon headed back to the hallway and into the kitchen.

“Now, the kitchen will change a lot… we are going to open it up into the dining room… so there can be a large island… and open this all up…” Mick explained and Nikita shivered in Michael’s arms. “That’s not because the room is bad… it’s a tactical decision.”

Nikita couldn’t believe that they would think of tearing down almost two whole walls. She shook her head as there was plenty of room in there for the kitchen and there was a large breakfast nook where she noted people were sitting, although she didn’t pay too much attention to that right now. “No… you can’t… you can open up the door way… get rid of those doors… but no… can’t open this all up.”

“Kita…”

“No,” Nikita shook her head. “We aren’t to be afraid and we don’t need to open this up. We are safe, Michael.”

Michael swallowed hard and shifted. “We aren’t doing any of this until the spring…”

“And we are mostly working on the area that used to be slave quarters….” Mick spoke and Nikita jerked. “What?”

“Well now it is just a large area for all of the others in the family to live… and that is where the new bathroom for down here has been built…” Mick commented as he dusted his hands together. “Just a couple of things. Nothing too big. Nothing set in stone.”

“Ah… can I ask a question?” a voice that neither Michael nor Nikita recognized came from the table. The woman with a red bob leaned forward and looked at directly at the couple. “Is there a reason why he is carrying you? Is this an over the threshold kind of thing?”

Michael tensed up and frowned. “I don’t know who you are…”

“Lope.”

“Lope?” Michael blinked as he first couldn’t believe that this woman interrupted him and then he didn’t believe her name. Nikita tugged on his shirt. “Be nice.”

“And of course you don’t know who I am because Kip sent me out here and I didn’t realize it was during sleeping… He thinks that I can help Nikita better than he can. If he allowed you to carrying her around everywhere, I can see why things have been going slowly,” Lope shrugged her shoulders and Michael used his foot to pull a chair out and ease Nikita down. Nikita almost wanted to laugh at what was happening. “Ah… I’m not steady enough on the stairs.”

“That’s down the hallway,” Lope smiled and Nikita nodded her head. “And I haven’t eaten… for a while.”

“That’s got to stop,” Lope declared as she tilted her head to the side. “I couldn’t believe that they didn’t have you coming downstairs… it throws off your concept of what day it is… probably why you were still asleep… and you probably are ready for breakfast when it should be dinner.”

“I have meatloaf almost done,” Walter spoke up from the table where he had been listening to this woman for a while now. “I think Kip was right with her.”

“Lope isn’t your real name,” Nikita stated and the woman chuckled. “Well, it is my legal name now. My parents named to Penelope Philomena Peterson… I had nicknames of Three P and P3, like from that Charmed show… so when I turned 18, I had it legally changed to Lope, which is half of my given name… and I ditched the middle name… and some of my last name… So legally, you will be paying Lope Peters.”

“Are you ok waiting for the meatloaf?” Michael asked as he wasn’t sure what to think of this woman, but Nikita wasn’t objecting to her – yet.

“No reason for her to wait to eat salad. It has hardboiled eggs in it. .. protein will be very important during recovery,” Lope interjected. Nikita nodded her head at Michael. “Sounds like a plan.”

“And don’t you dare thin of giving her coffee. I need her on a routine… of going to bed at bedtime… and coming downstairs for breakfast like the rest of you… by 8 am tomorrow morning.”

“I hadn’t slept in many days,” Nikita choked out.

“That’s going to stop,” Lope announced.

Michael smiled. “I can concur with that.”
