“Do you want to walk to school together in the morning?” Adam inquired and Lisa shook her head slightly as she sat on the porch and looked out towards the street. She was glad for Adam’s company today, but it was still very awkward. “We don’t need Gretchen seeing us together, Adam.”
Adam looked at the blanket that Lisa had wrapped around her and sighed. “If you were cold we could have talked inside…”
“Eric was sleeping,” Lisa shrugged her shoulders and Adam sighed. “You worry too much about others, Lisa. I don’t care if Gretchen sees us together. We are simply friends and she couldn’t handle it. I’m not dating her any longer and she is going to have to live with that.”
“And we don’t need the entire school talking about us. It’s the right thing to do, Adam,” Lisa replied as she pulled her legs up onto the bench and looked at Adam. “Why didn’t you have dinner with Sabina, Reagan and Mick?”
“I wanted to be with someone my age,” Adam chuckled and Lisa shook her head. “You were hoping that by being near me that I’d want to talk about… the dreams.”
Adam shrugged his shoulders. “Well, if that happened… it would have happened.”
Lisa rolled her eyes. “You can’t force me, Adam.”
“Did I bring up the subject?” Adam gently asked as he turned to look at Lisa. “I know that when you are ready, you’ll talk to someone. Since I know that you won’t bother Rhoda and Nat about it… I’m hoping that it is someone that you can trust.”
Lisa pressed her lips together and rocked back slightly and shook her head. “No, not talking about it… what we need to do is talk about school… because Gretchen is going to be upset.”
Adam sighed and rubbed his face. “I thought you haven’t talked to her since she called you yesterday morning.”
Lisa jerked her head to the side and Adam rolled his green eyes. “She emailed you.”
With another jerk, Lisa glared at Adam. “How did you know?”
“She emailed me too last night,” Adam tensely spoke as he rubbed at his neck. “I hope that you just deleted it, Lisa.”
Lisa didn’t look at him and Adam groaned. “You read it… and you replied, didn’t you?”
Trying to stand up, Adam wrapped his arms around Lisa’s waist and made her sit back down. “Why? She was being unreasonable in the email that she sent me… she just didn’t get it, Lisa. That’s just anger and it is going to have to pass first.”
“I promised that I wouldn’t make it more painful for her,” Lisa whispered as she pushed the blanket off of her arms and then kicked it off of her legs. “I won’t be talking to you at school, Adam. That’s what Gretchen asked for.”
“I can’t believe it,” Adam swung his head from side to side. “We are friends. Friends have to talk.”
“Not at school,” Lisa declared and Adam shook his head back. “No… she doesn’t know all that is going on with you and it is unreasonable for you think that you need to spare her pain. She is the one that didn’t want to be with me any longer, Lisa.”
“It’s just until she gets over you, Adam. She’ll find someone else in a couple weeks. We’ll play it low until the summer,” Lisa outlined her plan and Adam now stood up. “That’s why you didn’t ask why I was here until now… because you plan on not seeing me until the summer. That’s crazy, Lisa!”
“She is hurt.”
“She was out with Craig Meyers last night, Lisa! I think she had moved on from all reports,” Adam snapped and Lisa looked at Adam with shock. “What? Craig Meyers? He is a pig, Adam.”
“She wasn’t protesting from the reports of it,” Adam spat out as he shook his head back and forth. “Robbie called me while we were coming home.”
Lisa was still surprised that Robbie had found a friendship with Adam after what had happened between the two. It was still the oddest thing that she still didn’t understand. Somehow Adam had forgiven the boy who had beaten him up after he was bullied for weeks. Lisa still hadn’t forgiven her former boyfriend and couldn’t stand being near him when Adam was with him. “She is doing those things because she is hurt, Adam. Gretchen will just continue to do those things if she sees us together.”
“Bullshit,” Adam shook his head as he walked to the edge of the porch. He swallowed hard and slapped his hand against the post. “I get to go back to school tomorrow… having broken up with my girlfriend and not having my best friend. That’s absolutely freaking perfect. Thanks a lot, Lisa.”
Adam stormed back to his house. He couldn’t believe this at all and he entered the house to hear the laughter. He forced on a smile and soon was tickling Sabina on the living room floor.
For now he had to fake it until he found a reason to be happy. He had to just get through these next two weeks while his parents were gone.
But Adam really missed them right now.
