Reagan jerked awake and sat up. Something woke her up and she didn’t know what it was. She listened to the silent night and leaned against the headboard. It was finally Saturday morning and there was only one more week and one day until Michael and Nikita came home. It wasn’t that it was too bad, it was just really different.

To add to the week, there was an odd conversation with the principal yesterday. Not because of Sabina. That would have been easier to handle. Instead the principal wanted to thank Reagan for her work with Sabina and to inquire if she thought she could do the same sort of function for another student along with Sabina next year. If so, the school would take over the pay that Reagan got, but Reagan couldn’t answer. There were lots of questions that Reagan would have to be given and she wouldn’t even discuss those questions until she could talk to Michael and Nikita.

The principal had said that she wouldn’t even be asking if Sabina was having problems or if the students were having problems with Sabina – but if anything Sabina had made her classmates work harder. The principal also shoved the folder into Reagan’s hands.

She had told herself not to read it, but after dinner she did. It was a boy a year younger than Sabina, but just as smart. The difference was that his parents couldn’t afford to do anything about that intelligence so he had to come to a regular school. They would have loved to send him to a school that could best suit him, but that wasn’t an option.

Reagan knew that she had to do the research on the parents, just to be safe. She could have asked Jason to start that, but she didn’t. Instead, she shook her head at the recommendations that they move the boy ahead one grade level to be in the same class as Sabina. The reason why it was working for Sabina was because she was in with her own age. One year might not seem like a lot, but at the age that they were, there were huge differences.

Thinking about this was making Reagan relax and the house still seemed to be silent. She started to close her eyes when there was a slight noise, it just didn’t belong.

And then there was more.

“I want my real mommy! I want my real daddy!” Sabina’s voice cried out and Reagan was to her feet. She was sickened by the cries. For as long as she had known Sabina, she had never had a nightmare. She hoped that was what this was.

Reagan was about to push open Sabina’s door when Adam stuck his head out, confused. “I’m handling this Adam.”

“At first… it sounded like Nikita…” Adam rubbed at his eyes.

“Go back to bed,” Reagan directed Adam as she opened the door and stepped into the darkened room. Sabina had just two stuffed toys – one was a panda bear and the other was a platypus. Nikita had gotten her the platypus at the zoo and Michael had brought home the panda bear. She normally slept with one under each arm, but Reagan almost tripped over them as she walked into the room. “Sabina… wake up, darling…”

Reagan had whispered as she didn’t want to scare Sabina by bringing her out of the nightmare too quickly. She squatted to pick up the stuffed animals. She stayed low as she made her way towards the bed. Reagan flicked the bedside light on and placed the stuffed animals beside the light as Sabina still did not wake up. “Sabina… wake up honey…”

“Mommy… mommy…” Sabina cried out with a weaker cry as Reagan untangled the sheet around her hands as she thrashed about on the bed. Reagan swallowed and exhaled. She touched Reagan’s forehead and her eyes snapped open.

Sabina gasped for her breathe as she stared at Reagan. She shook her head and was scared. “Am I late for school?”

“No,” Reagan shook her head as she stroked her hand down Reagan’s face. “It’s Saturday morning… and it’s really early. The sun is still asleep.”

“The sun doesn’t sleep,” Sabina replied back as she was sitting up in the bed. She rubbed her own hands along her face. “I had a nightmare.”

It was almost refreshing to deal with Sabina. You knew that things were ok when she was being so direct. If Sabina was beating around the bush – you had problems. “Yes, you did.”

Sabina looked around and snagged her stuffed animals. “I always knew… my real parents… would find me.”

Reagan didn’t want to step into anything too deep. She was here for Sabina, but she wasn’t Michael and Nikita. She soothed Sabina’s hair and nodded her head. “Everyone has told me that. Those you stayed with… they weren’t good.”

“Not parents,” Sabina rasped as she stared down at her stuffed animals. “I miss my mom and dad.”

“Just another week, Sabina,” Reagan whispered as she tried to smile. Sabina frowned. “More than 604800 seconds.”

Exhaling Reagan shook her head. “You can’t think about the seconds, Sabina. I know that it is scary to wake up without them… but I’m here.”

“I’ve never had a nightmare like this,” Sabina shook her head. “Will you stay with me?”

Reagan was surprised and knew that Sabina could see the shock on her face. But then Reagan nodded her head. “Of course… if that will help you go back to sleep.”

“Turn the light off,” Sabina directed as she eased back down onto her pillow. Reagan turned the light off and then walked to the other side of the bed and eased into it behind Sabina. Sabina huffed as she turned her head and looked at Reagan. “You need to talk to me until I go to sleep… so I will fall asleep.”

Reagan wasn’t sure why this didn’t sound right, but Reagan just wanted Sabina to go back to sleep. “What should I talk to you about?”

“How about your boyfriend, Mick?”
