“I am so flattered that you waited for me to return your message… I know how hard it can be to make decision on a photographer for special events, but Whitney could have scheduled this for you,” Nikita explained as she sat in the office with only half of the phone calls returned thus far. She listened to the response and smiled. “I appreciate you waiting… and while I can more than comfortably fit in the studio shots, I’ve booked up for that Saturday afternoon… and I would be suggesting either Whitney Huwe to cover the even or Christopher Davenport.”
Nikita chuckled. “Whitney taught me everything that I know… in fact, she took the photos at my own wedding… Mr. Davenport filled in while she was eating.”
Nikita started to make notes and made the note on the calendar that it was completely full on that day. “We should do the studio portion about a week before… why don’t I call you two weeks prior to iron out the details of that day?”
Nikita saw Whitney walk in with a huge smile on her face as she finished up the conversation. Whitney placed the bottle of Diet Mountain Dew on the desk as Nikita hung up the phone. “Thank you!”
“You’ve been on that phone for hours…”
“As I was yesterday… I don’t know how I got so popular,” Nikita rasped as she opened up the pop and took a big gulp. “Thank goodness I didn’t schedule any photography until Friday.”
“Plus Michael handles most of these deals,” Whitney stated and Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “He was… but I’m not sure if he was doing that because he wanted to do it or if he was doing that just for me.”
Whitney settled down in the chair and looked around. “So… you’ll need me to take over some office work?”
Nikita looked at Whitney and shook her head slightly. “Ah… maybe if I didn’t have to call back at least twenty more people… most of whom probably want the same days and I’ve promised Michael, Adam and Sabina that I won’t work both weekend days this summer.”
“Ah…” Whitney pressed her hands together as a steeple. “And Davenport has made it clear that he will only work every other weekend as a photographer.”
“Yep,” Nikita snapped her mouth together and groaned. “I have a call to return to the art school… they want me to take on some interns… that could help with the studio work, but I can’t have them setting schedules.”
Whitney chuckled. “The problem with being popular and good.”
Nikita rubbed her forehead. “Michael would come back here… all the time… but I think he misses the lab. That was what he had set up to do… it’s his way of being…” Nikita stopped herself from saying anything about the Angel. Whitney knew some, but not a lot. “It’s his way of being helpful to the world.”
“Maybe Adam could help during the summer?” Whitney offered and Nikita frowned. “Lisa is going to help me out… as a shadow while I’m on shoots… she wants to see what it means to be a photographer. I don’t think adding Adam to the mix would be wise.”
Nikita stood up and pulled her hair up into a ponytail. She snapped the pop off of the desk and took another sip. “I don’t even know about bringing on interns… I don’t know how to interview them… hire them… supervise… I didn’t take this place over to do that.”
Whitney chuckled. “Nikita… just say no.”
Nikita hung her head and swallowed hard. “I’m saying no to parents… who want to capture their children… and I’m still taking on the projects that I want… zoos… animals… because sometimes the people are just still too hard to do in a natural setting… the studio is fine… but it is sometimes so hard at parties and events…”
“I know of a few photographers,” Whitney offered as she stood up and moved to Nikita’s side. “They were good… but not good enough to take this over for me.”
Nikita looked at Whitney and groaned. “Then they’ll be upset to be working for the person they think they should have the job of.”
“I wouldn’t still be talking to them if they were like that, Buffy,” Whitney grinned as she touched Nikita’s shoulders and rubbed them. “No reason to stress yourself out this much… start a waiting list… because you do know that some of these jobs can fall thru… and you can’t feel guilty for wanting time with your family. You are a newlywed… you need time with your husband and with your children.”
Nikita exhaled and nodded her head up and down. “Of course… and I won’t take into that time.”
“And that means closing the studio one other day a week… if you are going to have photographers working on the weekends… close down on Mondays. At least during the summer,” Whitney offered her advice. That helped Nikita take another deep breath. “Yeah…”
“And hire either a personal assistant for yourself… or maybe an office manager. You can’t do what Michael was doing… you don’t want to do it. I can see it when you are doing these phone calls. That’s why it is taking so long… and you get too invested in their stories. An office manager can do that for you,” Whitney outlined what she could see happening. Nikita turned and looked at her desk. She sat back down. She didn’t dare tell Whitney that she was afraid of hiring people because she wasn’t sure if they would get into what her life was. There was a fear in the back of Nikita’s mind about if she had a PTSD flash when one of them was around. They could learn things that they didn’t need to learn.
“Maybe Jason can help you research the applicants,” Whitney shrugged slightly as she had sensed that something was stopping Nikita. She also sensed that Nikita wasn’t going to do anything right now and that she needed to get away from the desk. “But let’s do something else… I think you want to come into the studio for a while.”
“What’s going on in the studio? We have no appointments,” Nikita questioned and Whitney smiled gently as she tilted her head towards the door. “You’ll have to come out and see.”
Putting the pop down, Nikita rolled her shoulders back, knowing that she was going to have to take something for the pain the stress had put on her back and neck shortly. She was sure that she should get to work with composing some sort of hiring posting, but reluctantly followed Whitney.
As she entered the studio, Nikita looked around and felt a rush of happiness.
Her wedding photos.
“I’ve been working on these… and I knew that you say the one that I did for Mick in your new family room,” Whitney spoke and Nikita moved to the frame that showed her and Michael walking out together. She stopped and shook her head. She was about to say something when she saw the next photo where Michael had spun her around. Nikita wiped at the tears that were in her eyes and she looked back to Whitney. “I… I didn’t expect to see them like this… I expected… a disk…”
“You wouldn’t just give a client a disk,” Whitney shook her head as she turned and pulled out two giant albums. “Only the good pictures… and there were a lot.”
“Whitney…” Nikita rasped and Whitney placed the albums in Nikita’s hand. “You need a break from work… let’s sit down here and go over…”
