Nikita gazed at the pictures in front of her that were taken by Dmitry Rutkowski and was half surprised and half disappointed. There was something that was too safe in them and she needed to talk to him before she continued with this arrangement. Whitney adored him so Nikita hoped that he only needed to be given a bit more creative direction, something that he had not had this weekend while he was covering for her.

She didn’t have to worry about his work ethic. He was here early this morning and had already done preliminary edits of his work to share with Nikita. In fact, she needed him to go onto something else so she could wrap her head around what he had taken and what she was going to do next. He was still unconfirmed but Nikita didn’t think for one minute that Dmitry would slack off once she offered full employment.

In fact, he was out in the studio helping one of the interns to learn about better lightening – something that Nikita had not asked him to do.

She was about to call for him when the door to the studio opened and Lisa rushed towards her. “I’m so glad that you are here… I wanted to do some of those things this weekend and I was disappointed.”

“We’ll talk later, Lisa,” Nikita forced a smile as she stepped out of her office. Lisa dropped her back and leaned her head to the side. “We are still going over to the Aviary, right? They wanted you to get new pictures of their penguins… and I can’t wait to see them.”

“They rescheduled,” Nikita spoke and she watched as Lisa frowned. The truth was that Nikita had called them to reschedule and the Aviary was fine with the change. They wanted Nikita to take the pictures and were more than willing to change the date. “I want to talk to you in a little bit, Lisa. But I have some other business to take care of. Maybe you can check the office website for comments.”

Lisa pouted as she knew that she was given a task in order for Nikita to work on other things. Lisa truly meant well but Nikita knew that she was not going to be a happy teenager in a little bit. Taking a deep breath, Nikita cleared her throat. “Mr. Rutkowski… my office, please.”

Dmitry turned and patted the intern’s arm as he walked towards Nikita’s office. “Please call me Dmitry.”

“You have an interesting mix of names, Russian and Polish.”

“Blame my mother… we are full-blooded Polish but she liked the name Dmitry,” he shrugged his shoulders as entered the office. Nikita closed the door and walked to the table that she had his prints out on. “I have to thank you for filling in at the last minute.”

“It’s good to have the work,” Dmitry commented with a shrug of his shoulders. “This studio is hopping and it’s exciting to help out.”

“It won’t continue to be this insanely scheduled. I’m going to make an effort to be more exclusive like I meant to be,” Nikita explained as she shifted and pulled out some pictures. “But I am looking to hire someone on full time. I take it that you are interested.”

“Very,” Dmitry nodded his head up and down.

“It would be mostly field work… I am going to concentrate on specific projects and things here in the studio,” Nikita outlined as she leaned back against her chair and looked at Dmitry. He studied her and folded his hands. “Is there something in my work that has you hesitating?”

Nikita couldn’t help but smile. She liked how direct he was. “The wedding pictures… most are standard shots and all are beautiful… but I always strive for those moments that are not traditional… I saw one picture like that.”

“I wasn’t sure how much of that was in the agreement.”

“All clients are told that we have creative freedom and most expect that,” Nikita explained and Dmitry looked to his hands. Now Nikita cleared her throat. “Is there something more that happened?”

“The wedding planner,” Dmitry frowned as he looked to the door and sighed. “I don’t want to be one to complain… but she only wanted the traditional… she practically dragged me from spot to spot.”

Nikita walked to her desk and flipped thru a couple files and looked back at Dmitry. “Was it Helen Peabody?”

“Yes,” Dmitry firmly spoke and he swallowed hard. “I shouldn’t have allowed her too…”

“Oh you wouldn’t have gotten anywhere. I got thrown out of a wedding that she was orchestrating… and so we won’t do anymore events that she is involved with,” Nikita pulled the file to the top to make sure that she had someone contact all pending weddings to see if they had Helen Peabody as their wedding planner. Nikita would take the lost of breaking the contract rather than having her staff have issues with doing their job. “So… the other events were stunning… the walk had very creative blur effects.”

“I wasn’t sure if the event orchestrators would like them… but I had plenty of other pictures,” Dmitry explained and Nikita nodded her head up and down. “I’m sure if they heard it described, they would say no, but seeing it will make them understand.”

Nikita watched as Dmitry loosened up some. But Nikita had a lot to do today and she had plans to complete. “We’ll have lunch together tomorrow to finish up the details. Now, you worked all weekend so I expect you to go home now.”

“Oh, I’m fine to stay…”

“I’m getting everyone out of the studio today… Mondays used to be closed and I’m going to do my best to reestablish that,” Nikita answered as she chuckled slightly. She glanced at her watch and then looked back at Dmitry. “Honestly…. By noon, this place is going to be locked up. We’ll go over schedule and things tomorrow. I have to pull some more things together.”

“Thank you,” Dmitry extended his hand. Nikita shook it as she suddenly felt really right about this.

Dmitry left the room but went back to the intern first. Lisa was on her feet and Nikita allowed the girl to come into the office.

“So… I looked at the schedule and there doesn’t seem to be anything on it…” Lisa started to speak. Nikita took a deep breath as she closed the door.

This wasn’t going to be easy.

“Lisa, you are a great girl and you have been so helpful…”

“What?” Lisa inquired as she jerked her head up. “What did I do wrong?”

“Nothing,” Nikita spoke as she shook her head. “Sit down, Lisa.”

Lisa huffed like most teenagers do, as she sat down and folded her arms across her chest defensively.

“I’m changing things around here and I really thought about what you are learning here… and you aren’t learning photography. You aren’t an intern. You are being used a gopher and that isn’t the experience that you want here.”

“I like what I’m doing,” Lisa protested. Nikita pulled up a bag and placed it on the couch between herself and Lisa. “But it isn’t the right thing for you…. So I have found a photography camp that is willing to let you start today… and I got you a camera…”

“I don’t want to go to camp.”

“I’ve talked to Rhoda and Nat about this, Lisa. I can’t give you what you need here and the camp is the best thing for you,” Nikita explained and Lisa grabbed at the bag as she frowned. “I don’t want to go.”

“I can’t make you go, but I’d like you to go,” Nikita sighed and Lisa jumped to her feet. “This is because of Adam.”

Nikita blinked her eyes. She didn’t know where this came from. “Lisa, Adam has nothing to do with this… I haven’t even talked to him…”

“You wouldn’t be dropping me if he liked me,” Lisa swung her head from side to side. Nikita exhaled as she looked at the upset girl. “Lisa, I made a mistake when I said that this would work… and I want you to have a good experience… not just grunt work.”

“Whatever.”

Nikita got to her feet and tried to touch Lisa, but she wrenched away. “Lisa, it’s a great camp based out of the University. I had to pull strings with Whitney to make this happen… and you are going to go to some of the places that you were hoping that I was going to go… like the Aviary… that’s the experience you deserve.”

“So Adam gets what he wants…me out of his life even more by turning you against me,” Lisa snatched the bag and started to move. “I’m going home.”

“I want to take you to the camp,” Nikita called out but Lisa was out the front door. Nikita rubbed her face and groaned.

Rhoda was right; Lisa was pissed.
