Adam stepped out onto the porch of the cabin and sat down on the bench, leaning back against the cabin. The rain was heavy and Adam didn’t like the fact that he knew that his father was omitting something. He hadn’t been the nicest either, but he blamed Lisa for all of that.
He knew better than to read the email. He knew better than to respond. But Lisa knew how to make him respond. It was the fourteen emails that made him read them. Each one was filled with more hate and he thought if he just responded once, that he would get Lisa to stop. But that backfired and they soon were instant messaging each other with Adam getting nowhere.
Camp was not to be about Lisa.
“Did you hear that we are going to the movies because of the rain?” Miles, the camp counselor of the cabin questioned as he stepped out onto the porch.
“Whatever,” Adam shrugged his shoulders as he stared out at the rain. He normally liked talking to Miles as he seemed to connect with him a bit more than the other boys. Adam knew that it was because he was older but Adam tried to play it off a bit more.
“I warned you to not check email,” Miles shook his head as he sat down next to Adam. “It’s camp and you were having fun when you were focused on soccer. You should have played Wii Soccer today.”
Adam rolled his eyes and leaned back. “I missed my family.”
“Your father is probably enjoying the time with his new wife…”
“Nikita isn’t new to his life,” Adam rolled his eyes as he looked at Miles and shook his head. “I know that I was wrong checking email.”
“And this isn’t about missing your family really,” Miles commented and Adam groaned. “Lisa is being a bitch.”
“That’s your ex girlfriend?” Miles inquired and Adam shook his head. “I thought she was my friend… and she was… until when I broke up with my girlfriend and Lisa decided to honor Gretchen’s wishes more than just continuing to be friends…”
“Gretchen is your ex… and she made Lisa do something? Dude, I think you should be upset at Gretchen for meddling,” Miles smirked as he shook his head from side to side.
“Gretchen knew that I was friends with Lisa before we started to date… but it was ok when Lisa was dating Rob…”
“Rob who is at the football camp?”
“Yeah,” Adam nodded his head and Miles groaned again. “Seriously… this is too much drama.”
“That’s what I’ve been saying to Lisa… and that it has been enough time to honor Gretchen’s wishes that we don’t spend time together. It isn’t like I want to date Lisa. I just want her to stop being mad at me… which I don’t know why she is mad at me because it is Gretchen that she should be mad at… and she doesn’t need to continue to date every random guy that she meets…”
“Whoa…” Miles lifted a hand as he shook his head. “That just stepped into soap opera territory…”
Adam looked at Miles and rubbed his hand against his forehead. “I don’t know how to get out of this mess.”
“Drop it all,” Miles shrugged his shoulders. Adam raised an eyebrow. “What?”
“Come on… you are in high school. Forget about rescuing this friendship with Lisa for now. She doesn’t want it or she would have fixed it by now. Drop her. Drop this Gretchen. Focus on soccer and finding someone else,” Miles explained himself as he reached out and slapped Adam’s shoulder. “Going to the movies would be a start.”
Adam rolled his eyes and Miles chuckled. “You didn’t even hear the best part about the movies…”
“It’s a movie theatre,” Adam shrugged his shoulders and Miles laughed again. “Yeah… but we are going with Camp Cheer.”
Adam tilted his head to the side and thought of one girl with raven hair. Cinda. She was one of the ones who would watch some of the scrimmage matches that they had when she wasn’t cheerleading.
“Ah… I got your attention now,” Miles nudged at Adam slightly. Adam frowned and shook his head. “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“You are thinking about one of the cheerleaders,” Miles joshed Adam and knew that Adam was playing it off. “I know that there are a whole bunch of them that like you… most of the guys here are jealous of that.. you could almost have a harem, Adam.”
“I don’t like them,” Adam huffed and Miles leaned back and sighed. “So you don’t care of Valeria likes you?”
“The dumb blonde? Yeah, I don’t see having much in common with her. Not my type,” Adam shifted on the bench and rolled his shoulders back. “I need a girl with more…”
“Interest in more than popularity contest,” Miles finished as he tilted his head to the side and studied Adam. “I think I saw Cinda reading The Hobbit the other day. Weren’t you re-reading that last week?”
Adam blushed and Miles didn’t poke much further. “I know that Cinda is going… and all the guys from your team are going to be going. It only makes sense that you see a movie… even if movies aren’t your thing.”
Adam thought about Cinda being around everyone else in his team and he didn’t like that. “Nah… I didn’t say that I wasn’t going to go.”
“Good,” Miles stood up as he slapped his hands together. “We’ll be leaving shortly. You should leave all this other stuff behind when we go.”
“I’ll try,” Adam nodded his head as Miles walked back inside, feeling as if things were going to get better for Adam.
