Michael closed the book as Nikita slipped into their room. She rubbed her hair back and shook her head at Michael. “Today was to be a day off… my first Monday of having the studio closed…”
“You look tired,” Michael reached out for Nikita as she walked towards the bed. “Settle into bed and then talk.”
Nikita eased into Michael’s arms and sighed as he rolled her over his body and tucked her in beside his body, spooning her while his hand protective settled over her very flat stomach. Nikita sighed as she knew that he was aware that his hand was above the spot that their child was growing right now. With that thought Nikita almost shivered with an unknown feeling.
But she was tired.
Nikita had planned on taking a nap, until Princess Sabina decided to change the plans for the day with one lie. She had said that Adam had called in a panic as he was hurt at camp and he didn’t want to go home. Nikita, who had been about to take Sabina out to lunch to meet up with Michael, called Michael to tell him what she was going to do. Michael almost left the police station, where he was finishing up some paperwork on a DNA report he had turned in, but Nikita had told Michael that there was no reason for both of them to go. Nikita put Sabina in the backseat and rushed out to camp.
It seemed as if Sabina wanted to see her brother.
The camp counselors found it cute. Sabina had spun a perfect story about what had happened, even elaborately telling Nikita about the kind of kick that Adam was doing when he got hurt. They all got a kick out of when Sabina told them exactly what she had said to Nikita. It hadn’t helped Nikita explain to Sabina that what she had done was wrong.
Once they got home, where Michael met them, Sabina just talked about how great it was to see Adam. Nikita had to walk away and calm down as her entire body was tense from thinking that something was wrong with Adam.
It was as Sabina was going to bed, early because she was punished, that Nikita attempted to explain to Sabina again about what she had done was wrong.
“Your conversation with our daughter… it took a while…” Michael carefully spoke and Nikita flinched and shook her head. “It was ninety minutes, Michael.”
“Care to give me the abridged version of what happened?” Michael whispered as he kissed Nikita’s neck. He didn’t want to make her more upset, but he was interested in what had happened. He never anticipated that the conversation would take that long. He wanted Nikita to get a good night sleep after the additional stress that she went thru today that was unnecessary.
“She knew that she was going to get caught.”
“Well, yeah,” Michael agreed gently and Nikita rolled her eyes. “You don’t understand… she knew that I was going to get into this conversation with her… she was prepared for it. Rehearsed almost. She had quotations and studies and all this information… like a lawyer… prepared to defend her position.”
“Quotes?” Michael questioned and Nikita nodded her head as she stared at the wall. “Emerson’s quote… about the truth being beautiful and lies being beautiful… and the one about lies being done with words and silence.”
Michael cleared his throat. Sabina had been prepared. “And studies?”
“Oh yes,” Nikita turned onto her back to look at Michael. “About how small embellishments have positive psychological impacts according to someone in London… and how it shows great character and strength to lie because it takes more mental energy to lie than it does not to…”
Michael rubbed his hand across Nikita’s forehead. “Ouch.”
Nikita stopped herself from rolling her eyes at Michael and instead turned back to her side so Michael could spoon her body again. “I… She is… It’s frustrating… she is a child, Michael. But it is so hard… because she is so smart… and she uses it against me…”
“I guess the point to take from this is that if she was prepared to argue with you, Sabina knows that it was wrong,” Michael tried to ease his wife’s frustration. Nikita swallowed and closed her eyes. “I think this was a message.”
“A message?”
Nikita nodded her head. “It was the quote about lies can be words and silence… She knows that we aren’t telling her something… this was her way to show that she knows that there is something that we didn’t tell her… so we have to tell the kids…. About the baby.”
Michael shook his head. “I don’t think that is it…”
“Ninety minutes, Michael,” Nikita hissed as she shook her head. “I know that I’ve wanted to wait… until in the second trimester… but it isn’t going to happen… but I can’t start with Sabina and Adam… but we have to tell them. I can’t live thru another one of these stunts from Sabina… and there will be more.”
Michael pressed his head down against Nikita’s and held her as his hand drifted back to her stomach. “I know that this isn’t what you want, Kita…”
“But it’s what is right for our family… and that is what I need to focus on… not myself,” Nikita rasped and Michael closed his eyes with a slap of pain against his heart. He wanted Nikita to get what she wanted and this wasn’t her way. “Kita…”
“We should tell Walter first,” Nikita interrupted Michael as she stopped him. She knew that this had to be done. Sabina had done a fine job make a demonstration of what she thought of her mother’s behavior. Sabina would continue to do something like this as long as she felt her parents were lying to her.
“Kita… we aren’t lying to Sabina.”
“Yes, we are by not telling them,” Nikita snapped as she shook her head. Michael stroked her arm and sighed. “It’s not a like. Its omission.”
“It’s a lie… silence can be a lie,” Nikita rasped as she leaned her head back against her arm, trapping Michael’s hand for a moment and then she lifted away. “Walter will be excited… it will get me some practice for preparing for Sabina’s reaction.”
Michael nodded his head. Walter was a good choice. “But he will understand why we didn’t tell him sooner. He is a good choice.”
“Plus he’d be pissed,” Nikita quipped and Michael chuckled. “Yeah.”
Michael kissed Nikita’s neck. “Is that all?”
“We should tell Davenport… to make it easier for Ellie… And Reagan because Sabina is going to be talking her ear off... and she might as well prepare herself for what is going to happen,” Nikita continued and then she sighed. “I guess I should tell Beatrice… I guess I have a lot to possibly talk to her about… I know that Ellie said that there isn’t much known about PTSD and pregnancy… but Beatrice might know something… or have some ideas…”
Michael hated these decisions. He wanted to give Nikita four more weeks, but her mind was made up and Sabina had forced it to occur.
He should have talked to Sabina.
“It almost sounds like a chore to you, Kita,” Michael whispered with a touch of sadness that he didn’t want Nikita to hear, but he couldn’t help it. “This is a joyous thing for us.”
“I know,” Nikita nodded her head as her voice squeaked. “I thought I had more time.”
Michael nodded his head against Nikita’s body and just held her for a while.
“We have to find a way to stop Sabina from telling Adam… she’ll tell him right away… and I don’t want him to hear it from Sabina…” Nikita fretted after some time.
“We are going to his soccer game on Saturday… taking him out to lunch afterwards…” Michael pointed out and Nikita nodded her head up and down. “We can tell Sabina in the morning… and send her out with Reagan… she won’t have time to tell Adam.”
“She’ll talk Reagan’s ear off… and maybe Mick’s,” Michael warned and Nikita groaned. “God… Mick…”
“We can tell him on Saturday morning too… we’ll just have Reagan invite Mick over before we leave… an early breakfast,” Michael suggested. Mick could bounce off the wall like Sabina, but he had calmed down a lot, especially with the more time he spent with Reagan. But Michael knew that Mick was only being included right now because his relationship with Reagan and because he’ll hear it from Sabina.
“I’m going to have to tell all the adults before Saturday,” Nikita’s voice quivered as she realized that once Sabina knew, all bets were off.
“One at a time,” Michael whispered into Nikita’s ear. She shook her head slightly. “We have until Saturday.”
“We’ll worry about Walter tomorrow… and move on from there… It will be easier the more that you do, I promise,” Michael smiled against Nikita’s neck. He couldn’t wait to tell people, but he had been waiting for Nikita. He knew that everyone would be happy. Nikita needed to see that.
Michael rubbed his hand against Nikita’s stomach and kissed her ear gently. “Now… let’s go to sleep… and let me continue to touch you here…”
“Michael,” Nikita rolled her eyes. “I’m not showing or anything.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Michael replied as he reached his hand away to guide Nikita’s hand down to that spot. He covered her hand with his. “Our child is right underneath our hands… it may look more like a seahorse or something more aquatic… but it’s our child… growing… inside of you… and you can sense it in your hand… can’t you?”
Nikita choked back a sob and nodded her head slightly up and down. “Michael…”
“Shh… sleep…”
