Tom walked outside and pulled out his phone as he walked out to the parking lot, needing to deal with business but knowing that he couldn’t be far from the ICU where Laura’s father was fighting the battle for his life. He glanced at the phone and then selected the contact that was his plan for some time now.

“Tom?” the man’s voice answered on the first ring and Tom exhaled. “Keane… always quick on the pickup, huh?”

“I was in-between patients… expecting to hear from the lab. Not you,” Keane replied with a steady voice that didn’t show the slight confusion on what the call was for.

“I need to call in my favor. I can’t even beat around the bush, Keane,” Tom declared as he turned the corner and started to walk past some cars, glancing back at the hospital.

There was a groan and then a pause. “I owe you a big one.”

“I told you we were even a while ago. But I’m hoping that after I get you to do this… you’ll see that it is actually a good thing for you,” Tom outlined as he paused and walked towards a tree to lean again. “I’ll be sending you an email with an airplane ticket… I need you to go there… I will get the licenses taken care of…”

“Woah… I’m not coming to where you are?”

“I’m in Salt Lake City with my girlfriend… her father has all the best doctors, and he doesn’t need an OB/GYN," Tom deadpanned and Keane even chuckled. “What’s up with the father?”

“I don’t know if he is going to make it,” Tom rasped as he shook his head. “And this phone call isn’t about him. I need you to do this, Keane.”

“I take that this is for someone who was in the agency, a woman who was in… or is she still in?”

“Not the agency you are thinking about,” Tom rubbed his forehead. “And not military either.”

Keane was quiet for a moment and then cleared his throat. “The shadow people?”

“I think we used to call them ghosts,” Tom corrected as he dropped his hand and sighed. “And you will be dealing with the woman who was in charge of them… because the ghosts don’t exist. But her husband… you best know that he is mighty protective of her.”

“And he doesn’t know about the ghosts.”

“He was one too,” Tom shut his eyes. “I didn’t want to do it this way, Keane…. I knew when they got together… that you might be needed… I was going to fly to you and explain it all… and not speak in this code… but I can’t leave Salt Lake City.”

“I understand,” Keane replied calmly and Tom sighed. “You take this on too easily.”

“You got me out of something really deep. I was getting kind of tired of Maine as it is. You are getting me out before it snows,” Keane joked and Tom leaned his head back against the tree. There was more that Keane needed to know. “The woman… I’ll send her file… I can’t risk another doctor… she has very severe PTSD.”

“I guess being a ghost will do that to you.”

“I think you better not joke about the situation,” warned Tom. “There is much more than what happened to her… there is abuse in her childhood… it’s a freaking miracle that she is married.”

“And I take it that she is pregnant.”

Tom pushed away from the tree and started back towards the hospital. “Yes.”

“First pregnancies can be difficult.”

“It’s not her first. But it’s the first that she is allowed to admit that she is expecting,” Tom retorted and sighed. “The files will explain it all.”

“I’m sure that they will.”

Tom knew that Keane used to joke that he wrote too much up, but he feared that Keane was still going to under estimate who Nikita and Michael were. He couldn’t do anything about that right now. “Keane… she, they need you.”

“How is your sister, Lainey?”

Tom stopped in his track and felt the shiver go down his back. Keane had tried to help her. “Haven’t heard from her.”

“I thought that she was getting out of the business.”

“She needed to escape the still birth… so she went back in… I have no idea where. It’s been years, Keane. I don’t expect to hear from her again,” Tom shook his head from side to side as the sadness pressed in on him. He disliked thinking about Lainey.

“But she said that she was lucky that it was a still birth… that it was a terrorist’s child… I don’t think I was brought into that situation because she loved the man who got her pregnant,” Keane hissed. Tom blinked back tears and shook his head. “Just get to… just follow my directions and know that I’m going to try to get back as quickly as possible… “

“I got things under control,” Keane replied as he knew that Tom didn’t want to talk about Lainey any further.

“I know… but I still want to do this right if I can.”
