Ellie closed the door and looked at the hallway, listening for a sound before walking down the hallway and finding Tom unpacking clothes from a box. “He shouldn’t be in this house. He should be in a facility.”

Tom dropped the jeans into the drawer and closed it. “He didn’t want to come here… he wanted a rehab hospital.”

“But Laura wanted him here.”

“Yes,” Tom jerked his head up and down. “She never left his side… had to be dragged out of the room when he suffered the second stroke.”

“But a new house?” Ellie inquired and Tom nodded his head up and down again. “Our other house… had stairs. It wasn’t feasible.”

“But neither you nor her are used to this place. He is going to need constant care.”

“That’s been arranged for.”

“It can’t be Laura.”

“It won’t be,” Tom sat down on the edge of the bed. “The house is simple.”

“And it’s close to Michael and Nikita,” Ellie pointed out and Tom nodded his head. “Along with you and Davenport… and Rhoda and Nat.”

Ellie tilted her head as she remembered talking to Rhoda earlier and she told her about a new private nurse job that she was going to take. “Rhoda…”

“Primarily,” Tom nodded his head up and down to confirm that he was going to have Rhoda provide most of the care for Laura’s father. “It can’t be Laura.”

“I know that,” Ellie spoke and Tom sighed.

“She wants to take care of her father.”

“She is his daughter. He won’t want that. And she isn’t trained in medical things,” Ellie stated as Tom leaned his head back. “It’s so hard, Ellie. I’ve taken her so far away from the life that she had. She was a detective in a police force. She was being fast tracked for captain…. And I turned her life upside down and this has been the first thing in a long time that she has asked for.”

Ellie swung her head from side to side. “You gave her options Tom. I know for a fact that Nat offered her a job. She could have taken it.”

Tom dropped his head. He knew about that. It wasn’t a surprise. Nat had come to him to tell him that he was going to offer the position to Laura and wanted to see if Tom would have objections about it because of the gray area that his life’s work had been. When Laura told him that she wasn’t taking the position, Tom had pleaded with her to take the position. It would give her something to do. Laura said that she wanted to help Tom, and that was basically running a couple foundations that didn’t require much from her. She was lost with what she was doing and Laura had seemed ok with that. But Tom hated to see that she was happy giving up part of who she was damn good at being. He was going to talk to Laura about it again since Nat didn’t fill the position, but then her father’s accident had happened.

“I don’t want to talk about that, Ellie,” Tom shook his head from side to side.

“Want to talk about your sister?”

Tom closed his eyes. “So Keane spoke of her.”

“Yeah,” Ellie whispered as she sat down and looked at Tom. “He is kind of waiting to find out what he is to do.”

“He is here to help Nikita.”

“And he has done that,” Ellie firmly replied. “But Nikita has calmed down so much… it’s a regular pregnancy.”

“That can change in a heartbeat,” Tom shook his head. “He stays.”

“Tom…”

“We don’t know what Section exposed her too…”

“She carried Sabina successfully with no prenatal care at all,” Ellie pointed out and sighed. “And I think Nikita’s worries about the PTSD have been handled.”

“Because of Keane,” Tom cleared his throat. “I want him to stay around.”

“Just for Nikita or the hope that maybe he is the key to getting in touch with your sister?” Ellie shifted in the seat to look at Tom. He turned his head away and blinked his eyes. It was clear that he was not going to respond. “Is it ok for Keane to take on some other patients?”

“Of course,” Tom declared as he looked back at Ellie. “I didn’t mean that he was to be exclusive to Nikita. Just that she may… be…”

“A bit high maintenance?” Ellie chuckled. “Yeah… At first I thought that… it took appointments.”

“And at any moment it could happen,” Tom rasped as he pushed a hand thru his hair. “But he needs other patients.”

“So that he will stay,” Ellie whispered and again Tom didn’t respond. She slapped her hands against her knees and stood up. “I’m going to check on them… and prepare for Rhoda. When is she going to be here?”

“In about forty minutes.”

“Maybe you’ll come in around then to help with Laura,” Ellie suggested as she headed towards the door. Tom cleared his throat. “Ellie… thank you.”

“No reason to thank me.”

“There are plenty.”
