“Yeah, I’m not sure if the band is any good… but it’s what I’m allowed to do tonight,” Adam explained as he started down the street, walking to get away from the house before someone changed their minds. He did feel a little bit guilty. He did just get home from camp a couple hours ago.
“I’m sorry that my parents are taking me on a vacation. I didn’t know that they were going to squeeze this in before I start practice with the squad. I know that you wanted to spend time with your family…” Cinda whispered and Adam chuckled. “I’ll have plenty of time in the five days that you are away to spend with them. I won’t be with the soccer team every day. And we have to get used to being apart. Rival.”
Cinda laughed and then stopped. “It’s good that you play soccer and not football.”
“Didn’t I tell you? The football team needs a placekicker…”
“Funny, Adam,” Cinda chided her boyfriend lightly. “I’ll meet you at the entrance of the park… in a half hour?”
“Sure,” Adam replied as he then hung up and shoved the cell phone into his pocket. The park was closer to him than it was for Cinda, but he was happy to be given this time with his girlfriend.
Adam was still stunned that it was Nikita that told Michael that it was ok for him to go out this evening. She had picked him up at camp and even allowed him to stay out of the store to chat with Robbie, while she ran in for the groceries. Adam couldn’t believe how much had changed during the summer and Robbie filled him in with all of the rumors and gossip. Adam would have to see how much of it was true. Robbie may have changed since their incident last fall, but he still had the tendency to exaggerate some things.
“Adam!” a voice called out from behind him. He frowned as he couldn’t quite figure out who was behind him. He turned and took in a sharp deep breathe. “Lisa.”
“Where are you going?” Lisa asked as she jogged up beside Adam. Adam paused for a second and knew that it was time for the truth. “Going to meet my girlfriend.”
Lisa swallowed hard. She had heard that it sounded like Adam had a girlfriend but he told her now. “Do I know her?”
“She doesn’t go to our school… her name is Cinda…”
“She goes to St. Monica’s,” Lisa spoke and then rolled her shoulders back. “Our rival.”
Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I like her no matter what school she went too.”
“I didn’t mean anything…”
“What do you want, Lisa?” Adam stopped to look at her, not wanting to play a game right now.
“I was hoping we could have lunch or something before school starts. Talk,” Lisa admitted as she looked at Adam. “Fix things.”
Adam groaned. “Are you still upset at Nikita for sending you to that summer class instead of working in the studio?”
The grimace said a lot to Adam and Lisa sighed. “I liked the class. She was right in sending me there… I learned a lot more, but…”
“You haven’t told her that,” Adam guessed as he shook his head. “You haven’t changed Lisa.”
“I have,” Lisa declared as she reached out for Adam’s arm as he started to walk away. “Please, Adam… She was right about things that I wasn’t sure I wanted to admit… and it’s hard to know that what I thought I wanted to be isn’t right… and that I actually want to go to school for marketing and advertising… and not to be a photographer.”
“And what is stopping you from telling Nikita thank you?”
“She has been busy.”
Adam pulled his arm away and shook his head. “She is pregnant. She is fine!”
“That isn’t what I meant…”
“Lisa, this is crazy… you could send her a note or just an email. That’s all she needs to hear.”
“I’m sure that Rhoda has told her.”
“It shouldn’t come from Rhoda,” Adam lectured as he shoved his hands into his pockets. “ You know, I have to get to the park… Cinda and I have plans.”
