Keane dashed out of the car and into the cold rain as he then bee-lined for the porch of Michael’s and Nikita’s house. He regretted changing the plans and telling the couple that he would come to the house after finishing up at the free clinic so that they could go to the hospital and pick up Adam. After hearing from Michael about Nikita, he should have made them come see him first. By getting Adam first, that might make Nikita play down what was going on.

The rain came down harder and Keane ducked under the roof and come to a stop as the door opened up. There was Rhoda exiting and slamming the door shut. “Keane… you made good time.”

“The one patient saw me and left,” Keane replied as he shook his head and saw the water go everywhere. “Guess it’s good that it isn’t cold today.”

“Yep,” Rhoda nodded her head. Keane looked at her and sighed. “What are you doing here?”

“Oh… well, Lisa is over and I had promised Michael and Nikita that I would take care of dinner tonight since Lisa… well… there are a lot of people in there,” Rhoda shrugged her shoulders. Keane rubbed his forehead. “I was supposed to see Nikita this morning…”

“Why? I thought you didn’t need to see her until her monthly checkup next week,” Rhoda commented and Keane sighed. “You didn’t see her.”

“I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible,” Rhoda chuckled. “But there should be plenty of fixings so you can have a taco or two if you can stand it.”

“Stand it?”

“Just go in,” Rhoda stepped out and popped open her umbrella before casually stepped out into the rain. Keane rolled his eyes and opened up the door and stopped.

It was really loud.

“Hello?” Keane called out as he walked into the house and looked into the living room where there seemed to be about ten teenagers and Sabina. It was Sabina who finally noticed him. She turned and started to run towards him. “Keane! Keane! Did you see that Adam is home?”

Keane didn’t have a choice but to pick up the girl when she leapt into his arms. He nodded his head as he could barely make out Adam, but it was clear that he was the center of attention in the living room. “I saw that, Sabina.”

“He showed me his new crutches… and they are really cool… and his one friend did something really cool with Adam’s hall pass for him and the person who is going to help him from class to class,” Sabina started to rattle off quickly. Keane took a deep breath and was stunned with a hand to his cheek when he was exhaling. “You aren’t going to take him back, are you?”

“Why would you think that?”

“Because you are a doctor,” Sabina declared. Keane chuckled and sat Sabina back on the ground. “Adam is home to stay. I’m not taking him back.”

“Good, because I don’t think that Cinda would let you,” Sabina declared as she placed a hand on her hip. “And I know the black arts…”

Keane nodded his head as Sabina pulled back with her arms out like Bruce Lee. “Where is your father?”

“In the kitchen. Away from the noise,” Sabina answered as she turned back around and jumped up. “Adam… did I tell you what my teacher was doing the other day?”

Keane walked down the hallway and saw Michael washing glasses. He turned at Keane. “Oh… I didn’t hear you come on.”

“How could you have heard me?”

“Yeah,” Michael rubbed a hand to his forehead. “Twelve kids will do that…. And I better get used to it until Adam is more mobile.”

Keane worried that this was a bad way to start. The children were in charge of the house. That wasn’t going to be good for Nikita. “Ah… Michael…”

“It’s worse today because it’s the first day… I’m sure that most days won’t be like this… and since its Friday none of them have to worry about school work or anything…” Michael explained and he looked around. “And thankfully Rhoda brought me food… because I didn’t have enough.”

“Where is Nikita?” Keane demanded as he needed to know where Nikita was hiding from all of this.

Michael turned around and then looked at Keane. “What?”

“You called me this morning about seeing Nikita… and then you called and said that you had to pick up Adam… but that you were worried about Nikita… Where is she?” Keane snapped and Michael tossed the towel to the side and sighed. “I’m sorry… I should have called you…”

“You should have called me days ago when the nightmares kept her up that first night… and then the second night…”

“That was a mistake…”

“Where is she?”

Michael tossed his head towards the back den area and Keane groaned. “I thought she would be upstairs.”

“I think she is fine,” Michael calmly spoke as he looked towards the room. Keane shook his head as he strode quickly to the room. Michael should know better than to take Nikita’s word on things. He could hear the noise from the other room and groaned, knowing that he was going to have to talk Nikita into going upstairs.

And Nikita was asleep on the recliner.

“I was going to wake her up for dinner… but I can wake her now,” Michael spoke as he came into the room beside Keane.

“How can she sleep with noise?” Keane shook his head. Michael chuckled and shrugged his shoulders. “She fell asleep before they arrived… and she needed to sleep… and I don’t think she is having any dreams.”

“You think that she just needed Adam to be home?” Keane asked as he leaned back against the frame of the doorway. Michael shrugged his shoulders and cleared his throat. “Probably not. But having him home helped her relax enough to get the sleep that she, and the baby, need.”

Keane exhaled and thought about it. There were so many things that he should be worried about, especially after how Michael had described Nikita earlier in the morning. He pushed a hand through his hair and blinked his eyes again. “Damn, Michael…”

“You should stay for dinner… make sure that things are what I think they are… but I think we should let her sleep,”

The two men slowly made it back to the kitchen and the noise seemed to get louder as they went. Michael smirked. “I had sent Reagan out for dessert… she most have gotten Mick on the way.”

“What?” Keane was confused.

“Mick always makes the children louder…”

Both men looked back to Nikita but she was peacefully asleep, her hands on her stomach.

Michael slapped Keane and headed towards the refrigerator. “You can help me organize the things for the herd that is in there… and then I’ll go wake up Nikita before we open up the buffet line… maybe Nikita can get food first before the stampede.”
