Nat wrapped his arms around Rhoda as she stepped out of the nursery that would need to be painted at some point in time, but it was doing fine for now. She laughed as she stepped away from the room and walked into their room. “Gosh… I get all this energy around him.”

“And then once he is asleep… you want to sleep,” Nat stroked Rhoda’s head. “You wanted a baby.”

“I never thought… we’d adopt one so young,” Rhoda rasped as she shook her head slightly from side to side. “And I know that it is only because of Nikita.”

Nat nodded his head as he sighed. “Have you talked to her?”

“This evening while you were out buying diapers,” Rhoda chuckled as she couldn’t believe that the both of them underestimated how many diapers they would need. And because all of this was unexpected, Nat wasn’t going to take a couple days off for paternity leave for a couple weeks simply because of other detectives being out on vacation or medical leave that had shorted the department. But he had done well getting home on time.

Rhoda sighed as she looked at Nat. The only sad note on the arrival of their son was how Sabina was taking it. “Sabina hasn’t talked to her.”

“They shouldn’t have told her,” Nat swung his head from side to side. Everyone knew how badly Sabina wanted a baby brother or sister. To tell Sabina that Nikita had gotten a baby and gave it away to Rhoda, although right for Michael and Nikita, was just harsh for Sabina.

“It would have been worse if she found out later,” Rhoda gently spoke as she believed that Nikita truly knew her daughter the best to have made this decision. “But it’s hard on Nikita to have her daughter ignoring her.”

“That will pass,” Nat replied as he thought about the couple rough patches he went thru with Lisa. Lisa was older and she came around. Sabina would do the same.

Rhoda nodded her head and leaned back on her elbows. “Nikita believes that… and Reagan may have found out why Sabina has been so determined to have a baby brother or sister.”

“Oh?”

Rhoda nodded her head up and down again. “Reagan met a few of the mothers of the girls that Sabina is close to… let’s just say, almost all the girls are preparing for a brother or sister… or two.”

“A mother is pregnant with twins?” Nat questioned and Rhoda shook her head. “The one girl has two mothers… both are pregnant.”

Nat blinked and sighed. “Peer pressure…. That will do it.”

Rhoda dropped her entire body back and stared up at the ceiling. “Nikita seems to be doing fine… but she is such a good mother that this is eating away at her. Hopefully Sabina will start talking to her soon.”

Nat eased his body done beside Rhoda and stroked her hair back. “Does it bother you that Nikita is struggling about this and we are happy?”

Rhoda thought about it and slowly shrugged her shoulders. “Nikita would be upset if I was bothered about what this has done to her family… because when Nikita brought our son to us…. I believed everything that she said.”

“That it wasn’t right for her family,” Nat whispered as he nodded his head. Nikita had been smiling when she was at the door with the infant boy in her hands. When they heard where the boy came from and how Nikita believed that the only baby that she could bring into her family would have to be one that she bore, they were honored that Nikita thought to give them the child.

“Ironically…. Sabina isn’t mad at us,” Rhoda sat up slightly and she paused to rub her eyes. “She wants to come meet him.”

“I’m sure that Eric Logan would like that,” Nat nodded his head.

Rhoda smiled at the name. They were ensured by Nikita and Michael that Erica had said that it would be fine to rename the boy, as long as Nikita promised to tell him someday when he was older about his parents, the good parts about his parents. It was Rhoda and Nat who thought that one way to ensure that he would always be linked to his parents was to give him their names. Eric Logan also seemed to suit the happy spirit that the infant already had as Tom didn’t just feel right for him.

“I thought she would be mad at me… for taking her brother away… but she even made cards for Lisa and for us…” Rhoda remembered as she pushed herself up off of the bed. “You have to read ours.”

Rhoda plucked the card off of the dresser where she had left it earlier and handed it over to Nat. He opened it and blinked for a moment. “Such big words!”

“Read it,” Rhoda declared and Nat nodded his head.

Felicitations on your neoteric infant male Homo Sapien. May your cardiac muscles propagate with adoration and your abode distribute additional fervency and jubilation!

Nat thought for a while as Rhoda sat down. “Do you want that dictionary?”

“I got the gist,” Nat chuckled as he handed the card over to Rhoda. “Sabina can’t be upset at Nikita for long. Not with getting us a card like this.”

“Lisa’s was harder to translate,” Rhoda commented as she leaned into Nat. “She used some Chinese in it because Lisa left Chinese class when Adam was taking it.”

Nat shook his head and sighed. “I hope… that Eric Logan is smart… but not that smart.”

“Its part of Sabina’s adjustment… she is smart… but she will settle with more time that she spends with her family,” Rhoda gently smiled. “With or without a new brother or sister… and for now, I guess she can learn to love her… sort of cousin.”

“We can’t have them be cousins,” Nat shook his head from side to side. “For Lisa and Adam.”

“They are friends,” Rhoda laughed and Nat shrugged his shoulders. He wasn’t sure how long they were going to stay just friends, but in ways, when Nat saw them together, he could see how Michael and Nikita would have been like if they had met while they were teenagers in normal families.
