Nikita was cold as she walked down the hallway. She knew that her whole body hurt because of the impromptu wall that she built with Adam. That night, while in the tub soaking after making a bad, rash decision, she got the call that got her to where she was now.
”Nikita, he won’t allow me to transfer him back home,” Ellie complained with a voice that had tears in it that Nikita couldn’t see. Nikita leaned her head back against the wall as she groaned in pain. “Ellie, he is probably scared.”
“He doesn’t remember me,” Ellie whispered roughly as she even sniffled. “I don’t think he even recognizes Tom… and absolutely not Tom.”
“Maybe Davenport should have gone with you,” Nikita sighed heavily as she looked up at the ceiling. She hated being so far away from Mick when he was hurt like this. She wanted to protect everyone and she hadn’t been given the opportunity to protect Mick as he had gone off on his own chase without keeping anyone in the loop.
“I thought this was going to be quick and Davenport really thought…” Ellie drifted off and Nikita swallowed hard. She knew exactly why Davenport hadn’t gone. He was sure he had found the Todd Hunter that held the key to where her daughter was. But no more did Ellie’s plane take off; Davenport confirmed this hot lead led to a teenage boy named Todd Hunter.
“He can still come out.”
“But did Mick trust him? He has already said some things that the nurses find odd,” Ellie spoke with choppy words and Nikita felt her chest constrict and it wasn’t because of the extra work she had done lifting the heavy bricks that she had selected with Adam.
“Are you ok?” Michael inquired as he stood beside her as they waited for the elevator that was taking a long time to reach to the floor so they could be taken upstairs. Nikita nodded her head slightly and Michael rubbed at her arm, just above her elbow, knowing that it was one of the spots that she wasn’t sore. “We could have waited a day… you did... overdo…”
“But Adam slept the entire night… and I think he learned his lesson,” Nikita spoke as she looked up at the lights as the elevator was approaching. Nikita swallowed and shook her head. “What if he gets more scared seeing me, Michael? What if he says something worse?”
“Tom is here,” Michael pointed out and Nikita jerked. “He wanted to have Mick declared incompetent to make his own decisions… to make him go home… I don’t want to rely upon Tom right now.”
Michael waited as the elevator opened and they entered to find themselves alone. He knew that Nikita was upset about that suggestion from Tom and he could only hope that Tom wasn’t around for the moment. “Kita, Mick will remember you… and he’ll listen to you.”
“We still don’t know what he was doing in this city, Michael,” Nikita swung her head from side to side. “I should have come out here when I found out that he was hurt. It would have made things better.”
“It wouldn’t have,” Michael shook his head and Nikita sighed while she looked at him. “I didn’t need you to come.”
“You barely got out of bed…”
“I would have been fine,” Nikita interrupted Michael as she didn’t want to be reminded of the pain that she had. She was pushing that behind her for now. He had told Nikita that she had worked harder than Adam that he was sure that she was punishing herself almost more than she was punishing Adam. But Nikita wouldn’t hear it and said that it was good to have a punishment end with a good outcome – a raised planting bed, for whoever might take up gardening.
There was no more conversation as Nikita turned her head away and they arrived on the floor. Nikita walked out and followed the signs, seeing Laura in the waiting area as they walked. She looked up and shook her head slightly from side to side as Michael gazed at her. Michael hoped that it meant that Tom was not in Mick’s room.
Michael looked in as Nikita stopped at the doorway. He saw Ellie stand up from the side of the bed and move towards them. Nikita waited and Michael touched her shoulder gently. “Why don’t you go in alone? He always cared about you…”
Nikita looked at Michael and swallowed hard. She walked in and was soon at the foot of Mick’s bed, surprised with how bad that he looked. In fact, it was hard to even see Mick under the bandages and all the equipment. “Hi, Mick.”
Mick gazed at the woman in front of him. He blinked his eyes a couple times and knew that he knew this woman. It took a while as he struggled. He moved his lips and then closed his eyes for a moment. “Pop-sicle.”
“Yeah, Mick,” Nikita smiled as she moved closer. She reached for his hand and squeezed it. “I’ve heard that you are having issues with your memory… that you don’t remember my friend… and your friend… and our doctor, Ellie Hlad.”
Mick moved his head from side to side and winced. “No… I know you… that’s it.”
Nikita swallowed hard and she didn’t want to be in this room. For some reason, this was tearing her heart apart. This wasn’t the Mick that she knew at all. “You’ll remember things again, Mick. I don’t even know why you are here in Salt Lake City… and why you won’t let Ellie get you home…”
Mick stared at Nikita with confusion as he didn’t have an answer. He blinked his eyes as a man came into view and he trembled first. Nikita held onto his hand. “We are your friends, Mick. You are forgetting a lot of things right now…”
Mick closed his eyes and he didn’t see his Popsicle or the man that was beside her. He saw a small girl with brown hair and Popsicle’s eyes.
“I saw her,” Mick rasped and Nikita paused, her mind pushing against the gut reaction that she had with that statement, saying that it wasn’t possible.
“Remember me, Mick… I’m Michael,” Michael spoke as he placed a hand carefully around Nikita’s waist, not noticing that Nikita was quivering slightly.
Mick gazed back and forth and knew that it was Michael. And he knew that he had seen their daughter. He didn’t know how he had seen her. He didn’t even know how they could have even had a daughter. But he had seen her and knew that it was important to say. “I saw her.”
“Of course you have seen Nikita…. You are one of her best friends,” Michael replied and Nikita allowed her hand to slip away.
“I saw… her…” Mick clearly spoke and Michael jerked his head away. That was when he saw Nikita, her face pale. “Kita? What?”
“He saw our daughter…” Nikita spoke and Michael looked at Mick.
“At school…” Mick closed his eyes as he wanted to remember the details.
“She would be in first grade,” Nikita whispered and Mick moved his head from side to side slightly. “No… quiet… kindergarten…”
Nikita tensed and Ellie cleared her throat. “Mick… you had a bad head injury… you don’t even remember the year yet…”
“I saw her,” Mick looked back and forth between Michael and Nikita quickly. “Yours… absolutely.”
“You may have seen someone that made you think about her… but no one knows where she is, Mick…” Michael warned and Nikita touched Michael’s elbow while shaking her head. “He… he saw her, Michael… it’s probably the most important thing that he remembers… and I don’t think we can deny it…”
“I’ll get Tom and Laura… maybe this will help…” Ellie spoke and Nikita stood by the bed, now clutching the bedrail. “You saw our daughter, Mick… that’s really important.”
Mick opened his mouth ad paused. He was confused that he couldn’t remember more. “Madeline… has to be mad…”
Nikita felt as if she was shot and she swallowed hard. “Not a problem now, Mick… You’ll remember the whole story again… can we talk about her? What you remember about her?”
“Your eyes…” Mick rasped as he turned his head to the side, falling to sleep.
