Nikita rubbed her tired face as she walked down the stairs. It was early, but she was awake, despite her tiredness. She needed coffee and so would Michael. But before she could turn to go to the kitchen, Nikita noticed that the light was on in the living room. Rubbing her tired eyes again, she stepped forward and stopped.
“April.”
April lifted her head up from the book that was in her lap and smiled brightly. “Good morning, Mommy.”
Nikita dropped her hands instantly, finding herself suddenly awake from April being up and then suddenly by all the things that she should have had done for her daughter. “You should have woken me up, darling… you must be hungry…”
“You were sleeping,” April pointed out as she smiled at her mother. “And you’ll make me breakfast now that you are up.”
Nikita nodded her head as she felt a bit of fear in her throat build. What was she supposed to make for April? They all seemed to function fine off a small bowl of cereal in the morning unless Michael woke up and make French toast or crepes. Nikita couldn’t make either of those things. She hoped that April liked scramble eggs.
“You could have turned on the television,” Nikita walked in and moved closer to her daughter. April looked up at Nikita and blinked her eyes. “It isn’t locked?”
“Ah… no,” Nikita shook her head in confusion.
“I like this book either way,” April pointed out as she looked back down to the book. It was not like the book that Nikita had read to her daughter last night. There were no pictures in it.
“It was ok for me to get it out of the library, right?” April nervously asked. Nikita blinked her eyes and nodded her head. “Of course it was…”
Nikita squatted down and couldn’t tell what the book was. “I didn’t know that you knew how to read. The school said you didn’t.”
“Who cares about spot the dog?” April rolled her eyes. She flipped the cover back and smiled broadly. “This is better.”
Nikita glanced at the title and knew that there was even more proof that April was wiser than her years. The book was The Borrowers. Nikita vaguely remembered the book from a mission that she had to pose as a substitute teacher for fifth graders. They were reading this book. Her daughter was absolutely not in the fifth grade.
“A girl in the one house was reading it and said that I was too dumb to read it… but I started to read it… and then got pulled out…” April drifted off for a moment. But she kicked her feet around and smiled at her mother. “It’s about these small people who live behind the walls… and they borrow things from the big people… and the girl, I like her… her name is Arrietty.”
“You’ll have to tell me more about the book when you are done,” Nikita stood up as she swallowed hard, fearing that she wasn’t going to be able to help April long. She blinked back tears and swallowed hard. “So… do you like eggs?”
“Yes,” April nodded her head up and down. Nikita paused and wondered if April was just saying that to please her. Nikita reached out and touched her daughter’s hair and then stepped away. “Well… let me get working on some special eggs for us… so you can get something to eat. You are hungry, right?”
“Yes,” April nodded her head up and down. “Is Daddy going to be coming down soon?”
“Once I start the coffee,” Nikita chuckled slightly as she was torn about leaving April in the living room by herself, but her daughter looked content right there.
“Adam won’t… he was just going to sleep when I woke up,” April reported and Nikita shook her head slightly. “I’ll have to speak to Adam about that later.”
“Yeah… at lunch!” April laughed at her joke.
Nikita laughed with her daughter and walked down and into the kitchen. Nikita paused and turned immediately to the coffee pot. She usually only used two scoops, but she doubled it and turned the coffee on as she tried to will herself to shake herself out of what was going on right now. Her mind was already churning the facts that April was reading The Borrowers, a book that was years above what she should be reading.
And they were still calling her April and she wasn’t sure how they were going to tell April that she could have the name Sabina, but not Sabine.
Knowing that she couldn’t become overwhelmed right now, Nikita rubbed at her neck as she moved to the refrigerator and leaned her head against the cool stainless steel.
“I always know it is too early when it smells like espresso when it should be coffee,” Michael quipped as he walked into the kitchen and spied Nikita by the refrigerator. “Is that a new pillow?”
Nikita turned and dropped her hands. “Just thinking.”
“I take it that this is about Apr—Sabina?” Michael questioned and Nikita felt a twitch jerk her shoulders up. “I need to make her breakfast… she has been up for a while…”
“I can make French Toast,” Michael offered as he moved to the coffee pot and took a whiff. It was clearly too strong and he poured it down the sink. He looked over his shoulder and saw Nikita rummaging through the refrigerator. “She probably would be fine with just cereal like the rest of us.”
Nikita shook her head as she pulled out the eggs. “I’m going to make eggs.”
“Eggs?”
“Yes,” Nikita announced as she placed them down and looked at the stove. “I can make eggs.”
Michael didn’t say anything as Nikita went to work. She did know how to make eggs and Michael just went about making a fresh pot of coffee that they could actually drink. He leaned against the counter and looked at the concentration on Nikita’s face and realized that she was thinking a lot. “Kita… this is more than our daughter being up without one of us being up.”
“Did you see her this morning?”
“Yeah,” Michael nodded his head up and down. “She looks perfectly content in the living room.”
“Without the television on,” Nikita pointed out as she pulled away from the skillet and rolled her head back and forth. “Reading a book.”
“I thought it was cute,” Michael admitted with a soft smile.
“Did you see the book?” Nikita inquired and Michael blinked his eyes. “Ah… I didn’t pay much attention to it…”
“It’s called The Borrowers…”
“Oh?”
Nikita nodded her head up and down as she went to the skillet and started to scramble the cooking eggs. “It’s a fifth grade reading level.”
Michael whistled and then walked towards Nikita. “We don’t have to worry about these things today.”
“We have to address them sooner than later, Michael,” Nikita snipped and she shook her head from side to side. “We can’t hide from these things.”
“And we just got home,” Michael rubbed Nikita’s shoulders.
“Maybe we can talk about my name?” April asked form the doorway.
“Hey little thing…” Adam spoke as he walked down the hallway, not sure why his father was staring at April much like Nikita was. He moved April to the side a bit. “Can I have a cup of coffee?”
Nikita stammered and just looked between her daughter and Michael. She was unable to form words, until she smelled smoke. She turned and tossed the spatula into the sink. “Obviously, I don’t even know how to make eggs.”
“I don’t really like eggs,” April shrugged her shoulders as she placed the book on the table and got into the chair. “Do you know if you have the next book in the series? I’m done with this one.”
