“It was completely unnecessary,” Michael spoke in the kitchen as his arms were folded across his chest, glaring at Walter as Nikita walked into the kitchen with Sabina wrapped in her strong arms. Nikita kissed Sabina’s forehead and bent down. “Why don’t you go watch some television or play a game on the Wii?”
“But I didn’t want to stop trying to break my record for Paps,” Sabina looked up at her parents with sad eyes. Nikita stroked her daughter’s hair back and kissed her forehead. “We’ll talk about that later. We have some grownup talking to do right now. It’s boring.”
Sabina looked between the adults and sulked out of the room.
“Sugar… I didn’t think…”
“You didn’t think,” Nikita interrupted with strong words as she turned to make sure that Sabina had gone into the living room. Nikita turned in a circle and stayed away from Michael as she shook her head. “Where did you think that this was going to help?”
“I thought she would burn out some energy… Last night, she just bounced from person to person… I don’t think she even slept,” Walter explained. Nikita stopped and pressed her hands against her legs until her hands turned into fists. She looked at Michael and he knew that right now, Nikita couldn’t talk.
“Didn’t you think about how this was the first time that Sabina was here without us?” Michael asked Walter as he shook his head slightly. Michael was in turmoil over what he had seen and it was probably that disbelief that kept him from getting so angry. This wasn’t what he wanted to come home and find. First, Adam and Lisa were in a room together and then this ridiculous attempt to tire Sabina out.
“Well…” Walter stammered and then he sighed. “I guess… I forgot.”
“Forgot? Didn’t you think it was odd that we had more adults than children in this house? Did you really think it took that many adults to watch three kids… and two of them are teenagers?” Nikita riled up as she turned away from Michael and shook her head. “That song… and what you were doing to her…”
“I’ve sung that song for years, Sugar. I used it to help you learn how to shoot your first gun!” Walter protested and Nikita shook her head as she couldn’t even face Walter. “You were manipulating her for what she could do. I know that she is smart… and you were having her do this crazy challenge. Why? Because it was funny to you?”
“She is amazing… and you have to give her something hard or she gets bored,” Walter tried to explain his actions. Nikita shook her head from side to side. “To run her around the house? Where are we?”
“Look… I can see that it was a bad decision…” Walter sighed as he stepped forward towards Nikita. He touched her shoulder. “Please… don’t be so mad at me, Sugar. I can’t take it when you are upset with me.”
Nikita felt the tears rolling down her face. She turned to look at Walter. “I’m not upset… I’m disappointed… that the one person that I thought that would understand what my daughter needs… just was… I’m just… disappointed…”
Michael closed his eyes with Nikita’s words and he could feel her leaving quickly out the back door. He looked out the window as she dashed across the backyard to the gazebo. Michael exhaled and looked at Walter. “This is a bit of a fine mess.”
“I’m sorry, Michael… I just thought that Sabina was going to be easy to look after like Adam… and she…”
“Oh, about Adam. Did you tell him that it was ok to close the door with Lisa in the room?” Michael tilted his head and Walter shut his eyes. “I did.”
“And you know our rule,” Michael commented and Walter sat down at the table. “I don’t know what happened… I’m good at this. I’ve been a foster grandfather for years!”
Michael went to the sink and rubbed his back as he shook his head back and forth. This was not the way to come home.
“Let me go talk to Sugar,” Walter spoke from the table and Michael turned while he glared at Walter. “Just give Kita her space right now. She is tired… she is sore…”
“Why is she tired and sore?” Walter inquired and Michael blinked his eyes rapidly. Did he really have to tell Walter? “Oh…” Walter caught on and leaned his head down to the table. “I didn’t mean… to make this so hard…”
“She’ll be fine if you just give her some space,” Michael whispered. Walter nodded his head and looked towards the living room. “I should then go talk to Sabina…”
“No,” Michael shook his head back and forth. “I need to talk to my daughter.”
“What? I thought you were going to go to Nikita…”
“Nikita can wait. But right now, I need to talk to my daughter. Because I know that she isn’t this hyper girl that you are telling us about. Something more is going on, Walter. It isn’t your conversation to have with her. It’s mine,” Michael outlined as he walked to the hallway and stopped.
Walter needed something to do and he wasn’t going to leave with things the way that they were right now. “Maybe you can drag Adam and Lisa out of Adam’s room… It isn’t right for them to be together that much.”
