Michael had been aware to make noise when approaching Sabina since they found her after hearing of how she was in that school. But now, he didn’t take that approach. He stealthily eased to the living room to look into the room to observe what he thought would be going on.

Sabina was docilely playing the Wii game, not looking very interested in it at all. There was no bouncing off the walls with happiness and she was calm while looking into the other room, wondering what was going on. Michael feared that she was afraid that they wouldn’t want her any longer after this.

That was her previous life.

Michael cleared his throat and watched as Sabina jumped, her eyes showing fear and her face breaking out into a huge smile. “Daddy!”

Michael allowed her to jump into his arms and he held her a bit longer as he felt his heart pumping wildly as he thought about this situation. He guessed he had sensed it from the beginning and he was almost sure that Nikita felt it too. But they were so happy that she was happy living with them that they didn’t want to do anything about it.

“Dad?” Sabina inquired as Michael didn’t let go of the tight hug. Michael turned and sat down on the couch with her. “We have to talk Sabina.”

She started to kick her legs, going into the role that she thought that she had to be. “Can we talk about what we are going to do fun today? How I can make Mommy happy?”

“Sabina… I have to talk to you about something that is serious,” Michael turned and touched his hands to her legs. “You know… you don’t always have to be happy… and full of energy.”

“I love it here in my new house. And my new room. And my new family,” Sabina grinned and Michael rubbed her hair. She paused and leaned back against the couch and Michael knew that she was intelligent enough to know to pull back on it right now.

“I heard about how you used to be in school… that’s how Mick found you. You didn’t really talk. I don’t think that was you at all… but I also don’t think the real Sabina enjoys running around and I don’t think she is always happy,” Michael gently spoke as he shook his head.

Sabina shook her head from side to side. “The other kids always say to always be happy. That’s how you get to stay in a good house.”

Michael was thankful that Nikita was not here right now. That statement knifed thru his heart and it would have imploded Nikita’s heart. “Sabina… we are your family. There isn’t any going back…. You’re our daughter and you are staying with us.”

Sabina blinked her eyes and Michael picked her up and placed her on his lap. “Your mommy and I… we have times that we are quiet… and we don’t talk a lot… and we aren’t always happy…”

“Mommy isn’t happy right now,” Sabina shook her head from side to side. Michael nodded his head. “I know… but you know what, that’s ok.”

“Really?” Sabina asked and Michael nodded his head. “That school… they wanted to be happy, right?”

“They always asked that… what would make me happy…. And I just wanted my real mom and dad…. And I have you now,” Sabina explained as she frowned and dropped her head. “You don’t like it when I’m excited.”

“I like when you are excited. I like it when you are all happy and jumping around. But I know that no one is ever always at that state… you are trying too hard and we just want you to be yourself,” Michael explained as he rocked her in his arms. “You’ll find it even easier to truly be happy if you don’t try to force it.”

Sabina turned her head to look up at her father. “Am I going to be punished like Adam?”

Michael shook his head. “I’m not going to punish you. I just want you to be comfortable here and I can tell that you aren’t all the way comfortable right now.”

Sabina wrapped her arms around her father’s neck and hugged him. Michael sighed in relief and then pulled away to look at his daughter. “Why would Adam be punished?”

“He kissed Lisa last night on the back porch when the adults were playing cards and kicked me out of playing cards,” Sabina replied. Michael held back his reaction by swallowing.

This was the exact reason why there were so many adults in the house last night!

But Michael also didn’t know what Sabina all saw. He wasn’t about to declare Adam guilty of this without proof.

But there were security cameras out on that porch that Adam couldn’t hack into, yet.

“Adam is older than you… but I will discuss this with him because I don’t think they were to be out on the porch at that time,” Michael countered as he did need to answer Sabina.

“Just like I wasn’t supposed to count the cards of Walter and Jason,” Sabina smiled broadly at her father as she wiggled off of his lap as he was caught off guard by that statement. “Can I go upstairs and read my newest book?”

“Ah… which one?” Michael asked as he was still trying to wrap his head around the fact that not only had Sabina seen Adam kissing Lisa last night, but Sabina was obviously counting cards while the adults were playing poker.

“Artemis Fowl,” Sabina announced as she stood there, shifting weight from side to side. “I should be done in just a little bit.”

“Yeah… go ahead…” Michael nodded his head as he felt emotionally drained from this small conversation, but he knew that it meant so much.
