“I’m still… in shock,” Reagan admitted as she walked down the path with Nikita and Michael. They were walking hand in hand. They were watching Adam and Sabina. Like a normal family.

“Some days…” Nikita rasped as she looked at Michael. “I fear that I’m going to wake up and find myself still in Section. I think…”

“We all have that feeling,” Michael finished as he nodded his head up and down, knowing exactly what Nikita was talking about.

Reagan watched Adam playing with Sabina and how the two got along. She had gotten more details about how Sabina was taking out of Section and what had happened to her while she wasn’t with her parents. To see the girl happy right now seemed like a miracle. “So… the school will let her be in the classroom.”

“She may be intelligent beyond her years… but she lacks some of the socialization…” Michael answered as he knew that Nikita was always uncomfortable about these details. She had explained to Michael not long ago that the things that they were saying about Sabina were things that probably were said about her while she was a child and were things that even Madeline had commented in official and unofficial documentation about Nikita when she first arrived at Section.

“Still, that kind of setting can be hard if there aren’t other talented children,” Reagan fretted as she knew that she had already made up her mind about doing this. Nikita did get her free and maybe if she spent time with this family she would find a way to stay somewhere for more than a year. It was clear that if the reports about Sabina were true that Reagan would definitely have a challenge in keeping her interested in school work.

“There is a pseudo-advanced placement class at the first grade level and that is the class that Sabina will be with. It’s just… her reading skills… are stunning,” Michael struggled to explain it. Reagan sighed and smiled. “She reads books? Not on the computer?”

“She wanted a computer and she gets on it… but she isn’t as interested with it as Adam is… and that is a good thing,” Michael replied as he shifted and realized that Nikita had gotten really quiet. That wasn’t too normal while they were talking about their daughter.

“What kind of books?” Reagan inquired as she didn’t notice that Nikita was being withdrawn as Michael had. Michael looked at Nikita for an answer and she was watching her daughter still. “Ah… Little People… Artemis Fowl.”

Reagan almost fell over when she heard that Sabina had read Artemis Fowl.

“Kita, what’s the book that Sabina started today?” Michael inquired as he looked at her blue eyes. She jerked her head and blinked her eyes. “What?”

“Sabina started a new book this morning… which one was it?” Michael questioned again. Nikita shrugged her shoulders slightly as she couldn’t recall the exact title. “One of the Little House books…and she finished it already.”

“That is very impressive,” Reagan commented as she saw Michael stop and stand by Nikita. “Kita… what is it?”

Nikita felt Michael but she couldn’t take her eyes off of Adam and Sabina. But her heart was starting to race even though she could see no threats to them right now. She felt the world narrowing and she gasped as she wanted to fight this from happening.

The screen was grainy and Nikita frowned. “Jason… what’s going on with the monitors?”

“Reception isn’t the best in that park, Operations,” Jason reported back as he looked over at her and swallowed. “I’m trying to enhance.”

“I don’t like this,” Nikita spoke as she shook her head. This was a mission that she had no say over. It was dictated to occur in this manner from the powers that be and it felt wrong. The fact that they made her put children in the field was just making her sick to her stomach.

At least that was why she said she was sick to her stomach.

“Where are our teams?” Nikita inquired as she studied the crowded park.

“We’ve had some transport issues with the backup teams… estimate is in five minutes,” Jason reported although he had just reported that information moments before.

Nikita circled closer to the screen with a frown. “I want a connection with the point… who is on point?”

“Neiman.”

“I wish Davenport wasn’t in Spain,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. She took the com unit and sighed. “Neiman… I need a status report.”

There was silence. Nikita pulled out the unit and handed it back to Jason. “How about one that works?”

“It does,” Jason answered as he looked at the unit and then started to type. Nikita shoved it back in and called out for the point person again. Jason studied the information and swallowed hard. “Looks like… he isn’t dead…”

“But?”

“Possibly unconscious?” Jason posed the option as Nikita watched the screen throb with action. The children were in the middle as the gun battle started and no one was there to back them up.

Nikita had to hold back her reaction. She couldn’t let other see it. She was Operations. She couldn’t let other see extra emotions – they may figure out that she is pregnant. Nikita pulled out the unit and handed it back to Jason. “I’m going to the Perch to call Oversight… and how they sent a bad profile. I don’t want to be disrupted.”

Nikita glanced at the screen again, knowing that she would watch this over and over again once she got to the sanctuary that she had inside of Section. The children were dead, many times over with the bullets that went thru that area.

“Kita… you are having a flash… sit down,” Michael directed her as she almost doubled-over with a gut wrenching sob. She knew that Adam and Sabina were ok, but it didn’t stop her mind right now. She just saw that gun battle.

“What’s going on?” Reagan asked and Michael didn’t pay attention as he struggled to get Nikita to sit down. “You are safe, Kita… nothing is going to happen.”

Nikita didn’t talk and she was crying. Michael could tell that she was trapped in the vision of whatever had this topic right now. He stroked her hair back as he squatted in front of her. “You are safe, Kita.”

Nikita started to shake against Michael’s hands and then trying to swat him away. She lifted her head to look towards the park and then gasped. Michael didn’t know what she was seeing, but he was sure that it was a morph of a memory and the two children that belonged to them that were now playing in the park.

“What’s going on?” Reagan inquired and Michael swallowed hard as he realized that Reagan was standing there. He had entirely forgotten about her as soon as Nikita started to withdraw and then quickly got stuck inside of a memory. “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.”

Reagan raised an eyebrow in shock. She didn’t think that the strong woman who had gotten her out would ever be a victim to something like PTSD. It didn’t fit with what she thought about Nikita. She was sputtered and Michael shook his head slightly. “You have no idea what she went thru as Operations. Imagine being Operations and hiding a pregnancy. Let alone silently planning on how to get the baby out of Section without anyone knowing. Alone.”

Reagan stopped and dropped her head. “I’m sorry… I just always thought Nikita was so strong.”

“She is strong,” Michael corrected and Nikita stopped moving her hands and then almost stood up as she shouted “No!”

That brought Sabina’s attention and Adam couldn’t stop her as she started to run towards them. Michael knew that Nikita would rather his attention be placed on their daughter, but that wasn’t going to help them. He had to be there for Nikita. Nothing would work out until Nikita got out of this flash and that was his job right now. “Kita… come on, Kita… You are safe with me…”

“Mommy? What’s wrong with Mommy?” Sabina panted as she reached them. “Come on, Sabina… let Dad take care of Nikita.”

“Something is wrong, Adam,” Sabina glared at Adam as she stomped a foot down. She turned back to her father. “Is she sick?”

Adam knew what this was and knew that Nikita just needed time. It had been a while since he had seen her have one of these episodes and while it made his stomach flip a little bit, he knew that it would pass.

But the presence of the children did nothing to help the situation. Nikita saw them and then tried to jump backwards, but she was on the bench. She started to try to crawl up as she shook her head from side to side, muttering the word no over and over again.

“Come here,” Reagan reached down for Sabina as she was sure the girl was about to launch her body towards her father. Michael clearly knew about whatever was going on and what to do for Nikita. Reagan would do Nikita no good. But she was a teacher and this little girl was the reason why Michael and Nikita were in this park to start with. Reagan was going to be her teacher and she might as well take the lead right now.

Sabina squirmed and Reagan continued to hold her as she stepped away from the scene. “I’m a friend of you mother and father’s…. my name is Reagan…”

“What’s wrong with her?”

“We’ll talk about that when she is better, ok?” Reagan stated partially as a question to Sabina, but she had no intention of answering what was wrong with Nikita. That was up to her parents to explain to Sabina at some point. Reagan had some suggestions on how to make it easier for Sabina to understand, but that wasn’t the point right now.

Reagan also knew that while Michael was attending to Nikita, he was observing her carefully. He wouldn’t let her go too far away even with Nikita like this. “Adam… why don’t you come with us to get some ice cream from that truck over there? I’m sure that your parents will come join us when they are able too.”

Adam looked at his father and waited for the curt nod that Michael gave him to provide the permission to go. He trotted over to Reagan and Sabina, happy that Reagan was still carrying Sabina.

Michael was able to get his arms around Nikita’s waist and sat down on the bench, putting her right on his lap. He held her as she cried out and fought. He leaned his head against Nikita’s back and then waited until he could feel the difference. It was some time before Nikita rasped, “Michael…”

“You had a flash, Kita.”

“Yeah,” Nikita admitted with a slight nod of her head while she tried to move out of Michael’s arms. But Michael kept her right there. He leaned up and kissed her neck. “About kids?”

“Oversight made the mission… I wasn’t given a choice…” Nikita turned her head back to look at Michael. “In a park… like this… and I just… got lost in that thought… and those kids… became… ours…”

Michael exhaled and allowed Nikita to slip off of his lab so that her legs were over his lab and she was sitting sideways on the bench. Michael stroked her face and she pushed his hand away from her tears. “It was an older girl and a younger boy… and I was pregnant… and all I could do is stand there… and watch them die… in a plot that Oversight made…”

“You couldn’t have done anything, Kita,” Michael pointed out gently and Nikita looked at Michael with clear blue eyes. “But I did do something.”

Michael stayed quiet as he wasn’t sure what Nikita was talking about. She leaned towards him. “That profiler died, Michael. I made sure. Innocent children…. I made sure.”

Michael nodded his head up and down. He exhaled and pressed a kiss to Nikita’s forehead. “Reagan took our kids for ice cream.”

Nikita blinked her eyes in confusion. She had forgotten what had been going on and then she remembered what they were doing. She was about to jump to her feet and Michael squeezed her hands. “She is bonding with Sabina. It’s not good that you had a flash, Kita… it’s been a while…. But it is good for Reagan and Sabina.”
