Nikita shook her head as Michael jogged out to the car and took the bag. “Michael… it’s just a few flurries…”

“You’ve been gone for hours,” Michael declared as he tried to reach for Nikita’s camera bag, but she shook her head from side to side. “I can carry that one.”

“I can’t believe that there still was a baptism today… and that you covered it,” Michael pointed out and Nikita sighed. “I promised Whitney.”

“I thought you didn’t want to take photos of children…”

Nikita stepped out of the car as she swallowed. She looked at Michael. It would be wrong to say that it didn’t bother her. It did bother her. But not as much as it used to hurt her. “I take really good pictures of them… but I won’t take a girl’s party… who is anywhere between five to eight.”

Michael was relieved to hear that as he turned his head and saw another car pulling onto the street. This was probably the last snow of the season, but a good inch was already on the ground. He took Nikita’s hand and started to walk towards the house while the car pulled closer and both knew that it was Nat’s.

Nikita placed the bag inside and folded her arms across her chest while Nat dashed out of the car and up the stairs. “Funny weather.”

“It’s still technically winter,” Nikita quipped as she tilted her head. “What are you doing out in this?”

“I had to thank you,” Nat stated as he rubbed his hands together. Nikita looked at Michael and nodded her head up and down. “So… that building is now shut down?”

“Yes,” Nat nodded his head up and down. “I’m sure that you knew that… you just came home.”

“I wasn’t there,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. She had come across some evidence about a building on the other side of town that was pretty clearly part of a human trafficking ring. Nikita called Nat right away and made sure that what she had uncovered could be handed over to the police so the proper authorities to act.

And she didn’t try to be the angel herself.

“And you didn’t set up the fund for the women we found?” Nat inquired and Nikita dropped her head while shrugging her shoulders. “I don’t think that is the dangerous part of what was done today… and could have been handled while I was at a baptism taking photographs for an overworked retired photographer.”

“Kita…” Michael chided slightly but he was smiling. “Is that all Nat? You have noticed the snow.”

“Just know… even though we said we got the evidence from an anonymous source… the talk around the shop is that the angel provided it… it doesn’t seem like we can get that out of neither the scuttlebutt… nor the news.”

“Maybe you need a PR person to shape a way to promote more people being angels – reporting when they know illegal activity is going on rather than turning away from it,” Nikita seriously spoke as she tilted her head to the side, finding it sad that she had to say this. She shook her head. “It’s ok, Nat… I’m glad that things went well.”

“That’s not the only reason why I stopped by to thank you.”

Nikita rolled her shoulders back and stepped closer to Nat. “You don’t need to thank me for anything.”

“Well, this is from me and Rhoda… because that letter… it meant…” Nat choked slightly as he shook his head.

Michael frowned. He didn’t know what Nat was talking about now. Nikita had told him all about the building and had been there when she gave the evidence to Nat. But he didn’t know anything about a letter. “What’s going on?”

“They needed a reference,” Nikita turned towards Michael. She smiled and tapped Michael’s arm. “That’s all.”

“To become a foster family? To possibly adopt? With me being a Lieutenant in the police force and Rhoda being a former nun who is now a nurse? Your letter is making them think of us as serious candidates,” Nat rattled off as he didn’t realize that Michael was confused.

Nikita stepped forward and touched Nat’s cheek. “You both are a great couple… and I see that you are going to be great parents… not just foster parents.”

Nat took Nikita’s hand and squeezed it even though both were gloved. “Thank you.”

Nat turned and nodded his head slightly at Michael and then dashed back down to his car. Nikita pushed Michael in the house and closed the door. She was not surprised as Michael stood there now with his arms crossed and a raised eyebrow. “They needed a reference letter.”

“I thought you would be concerned about us…”

“I didn’t send it as me,” Nikita winked and tried to walk away. Michael stepped and stopped her. “And he knew this?”

“He knew that I couldn’t send it as me, “ Nikita nodded her head up and down. “And it wasn’t fair that the officials were holding it against them that they found love later in life… when it wasn’t possible for them to have children… and just because Rhoda changed her mind about being a nun after she realized love? That was wrong… and I had to do something.”

Michael wrapped his arms around Nikita and sighed. “You are an amazing woman.”
