Nikita didn’t open up the phone at any point. She went right into the office and got onto computers. She pulled out the extra laptop and started to type furiously as Michael walked into the room. “Kita… are we in danger?”
“Clothes,” Nikita hissed as she tugged at the sheet but didn’t take her eyes off of the computer screens. Michael was frustrated but he knew that look on Nikita’s face. She would not tell him what he desired right now. But he could gather clothes for them.
Because he wasn’t going to let Nikita stay alone with this even if she tried to push him away.
Nikita was moving in routine as she knew that something was wrong – but that it wasn’t a threat to any of them. At least, she was almost sure of that. That was what she was establishing first. That they were safe. The true meaning of the alert was secondary.
Michael arrived with the clothes and Nikita turned her head and took them. “Thank you.”
“Are we safe?” Michael asked as he pulled a shirt over his head. Nikita pulled the shirt over her body and sat back down on the chair. She glanced around as her head started to bob up and down. “Yes.”
“What can I do?” Michael questioned as he could still hear some hesitation in Nikita’s voice with that answer. He had some warning systems in place that would probably put him in a state like this. He would be able to assess the level of danger in about the time that Nikita has had, but it would still take more time to be more certain.
“I need Adam’s laptop,” Nikita spoke as she continued to work rapidly, but she was getting into a rhythm. Michael thought for a second as he knew that Adam would freak. “I have extras in the storage room downstairs…”
“Adam’s is already booted up,” Nikita replied as she didn’t look at Michael. She turned her head as she could feel Michael’s worries. “He’ll understand.”
“I don’t know what is going on,” Michael warned but Nikita turned her attention back to the screens. Michael pushed his hands thru his hair as he went to Adam’s room and retrieved the laptop. “He has it locked down.”
Nikita looked at Michael and slightly rolled her eyes. She motioned for Michael to sit down with it and she got onto the keyboard and easily got access. “Something needs my attention, Michael… and it’s taking me longer to get thru things.”
“It hasn’t been that long.”
“I can’t ask Jason to do some of this for me… he is out with Daisy right now… or maybe in bed with Daisy…” Nikita continued to work as she spoke. She pounded the keys and moved onto the next machine. She glanced at the code and she leaned back.
“Kita?”
Nikita allowed her eyes to review the screen and she dropped her head while shaking it sadly from side to side. “I need to be on a flight to St. Louis as soon as possible. Can you arrange that?”
“I’ll do it for us.”
“I have to go,” Nikita stated and Michael touched her elbow. “Tell me what is going on. I can help you more than booking us airline tickets.”
Nikita shook her head as she continued to work. Michael frowned but started to look for the airline tickets. He opened up some information to find the proper identifications that they could use to travel, Michael safe in his identity of Michael Pomeroy.
He didn’t care if Nikita didn’t want him to go, he was going.
“Wait,” Nikita spoke clearly. “We need to stop somewhere… on the way.”
Michael felt slight relief that she had said “we”, as it meant that she knew that Michael wasn’t going to let her go on her own. He had almost finished the purchase and he pulled away. “Kita?”
“Cleveland… we have to stop in Cleveland… I need to get some… resources,” Nikita swallowed hard as she flipped some screens off and focused on one right in front of her. Michael watched as she put on some headphones and he went back to the flights.
It wasn’t long later that Nikita pulled the headphones off and wiped at tears on her face. He waited a few moments to allow Nikita to compose herself.
“We can leave at 8 pm this evening… first flight that gets us to Cleveland… but it can be tight as there is a transfer of planes with just a short window of layover…” Michael spoke and Nikita nodded her head. “We’ll make it happen.”
“I’ll have backup flights planned in case the connection doesn’t work out,” Michael offered as he finished up the work. He got the email confirmations and closed the laptop up. “Now…. Tell me.”
Nikita turned off the monitors and leaned back in the chair. She realized then that she had never gotten the pants on and she took the time to pull them up over her bare legs. She rubbed her face and then turned to face Michael. “I don’t keep tabs on most of the people that I got out of Section… But I really watch those children that I got out… the ones that I can’t be sure why they were in Section to start with… and what was done with them.”
Michael felt a tickle in his throat throb. “How many children?”
“There was over a hundred,” Nikita admitted as she rubbed her hands along her neck. “And I never found all the files… there were hints of some brainwashing on them… some experimentation... but I couldn’t find the files that Madeline had before I had to vacate Section… the children had been gone for a long time.”
“Something is wrong with one of them?” Michael asked and Nikita nodded her head. “I worry the most about the younger ones… I have tapered off monitoring of the ones that are adults now… the youngest was about seven years old…”
“And?”
“I had to give her a name… I named her Lisa… and she was wickedly smart… It is hard to place the smart children. It has been tough as she has bounced from family to family… I should have been watching more closely… I should have done something before now,” Nikita shook her head as she looked up at the ceiling.
“You got her out while you were pregnant?” Michael inquired and Nikita nodded her head. “She is slightly older than Adam… “
“What happened to cause you to go to her now?”
“I promised that I’d look after her,” Nikita winced as she leaned forward and clutched her stomach. “And I just had to listen to a 911 call that she placed… as she found her foster mother… shot…”
“Someone found her?”
“Foster mother had a boyfriend… Lisa isn’t a security risk,” Nikita rasped as she rubbed her hands together. “But I can’t trust that system… she has been bounced at least ten times… and I can’t leave her there.”
“This isn’t a replacement for our daughter.”
“I didn’t think that at all!” Nikita shouted as she almost jumped to her feet. Nikita took a deep breath and exhaled. “We aren’t right for her… but I need to bring her here… so I can watch… be sure... that I don’t fail again.”
Michael leaned over and squeezed Nikita’s knee. “You have done a lot for her already… she is alive.”
Nikita nodded her head up and down although Michael wasn’t sure if Nikita believed what he had said. It was clear that Nikita felt that she had failed Lisa. “Why do we need to stop in Cleveland?”
“Identification of my relationship to her… a long lost cousin coming to claim family…” Nikita explained while she pulled her thoughts together. “But it has been years… and I’m not sure how quickly they’ll release her to me… but she is coming with me.”
Michael thought for a second and opened up Adam’s laptop. He looked around and glanced at Nikita. “We’ll give you a back history of being Special Forces… I’m sure that Tom can collaborate that… and your assignment didn’t allow you contact with your family… you just got out and found out about Lisa.”
“That’s a stretch…”
“They won’t question a national hero… and we’ll put something in there that indicates great mother skills,” Michael shrugged his shoulders. “Give me time on it… until we have to leave.”
“How do you fit in?”
“Two heroes are easier to release too… if you don’t mind being married for this,” Michael casually spoke as he typed.
Nikita rubbed her hands along her neck and shook her head back and forth. “I have no problems with that.”
Michael reached over and cupped Nikita’s face. “We can’t keep Lisa. What are we going to do after you get her?”
“I… I haven’t figured that out yet.”
