“This isn’t good, Nikita,” Michael admitted as he looked at the screens where Nikita had outlined some ways to approach St. Louis, but it wasn’t going well.
“I don’t want to bring anyone else into this,” Nikita sighed as she leaned forward and rubbed her head. She lifted it and looked at Michael. “But I have called Tom already.”
Michael was surprised to hear that Nikita had done that, but it was absolutely what needed to be done. It was too soon for them to show back up in St. Louis. Detective Laura Rowles was too good. He had the feeling that he wanted to take care of this himself too, but it was not clear what they were going to find. It would be completely different if they were going to absolutely find their daughter, but there was no guarantee.
“He seemed… too ready to talk about this, Michael,” Nikita frowned as she shook her head. She had trusted Tom about a lot of things, but this time, something felt different. Nikita rubbed her hands together and tried to look away. But Michael touched her shoulder and didn’t have to ask. “It’s a gut feeling…”
“We all have things that are hidden. I don’t believe his are dangerous to us,” Michael spoke as he heard the doorbell. He looked over and then back to Nikita. “He came quickly, Nikita.”
Nikita exhaled slowly as she waited for Michael to go to the door for Tom. She flicked the screen off and turned to face Tom as he entered. “Thanks for coming.”
“It sounded really important,” Tom spoke and Nikita nodded her head. She shifted as Michael became alongside her. “We have a lead on finding our daughter.”
“That’s great!” Tom exclaimed with happiness. “ You know that I will do whatever I can to help you out with this… I know that it hasn’t been easy…”
“We all have found a balance between looking for her and having a life,” Michael spoke up as he almost felt that Tom was trying too hard right now. Michael wasn’t sure, but maybe Nikita was slightly on the right track.
Nikita stood up and pulled Michael’s hand against her waist. She walked into the living room and sat down, but she was fidgeting. Tom sat down on the edge of the loveseat with a sigh. “You already have something for me to do.”
“We need you to go,” Nikita spoke and stopped, not able to say the city quite yet.
Tom flinched as he shook his head. “I thought that they were looking for the mothers… that DNA tests were needed.”
“If this man even has our daughter and we could be… but we don’t even know what his caseload was like,” Nikita explained and Tom tilted his head. He knew that there was more. “He is… in a city that we should stay away from for a while.”
Tom closed his eyes as he whispered. “St. Louis.”
“Obviously, we need to find a different kind of approach,” said Michael as he looked at Tom carefully. “You have been watching her activities, right?”
“Laura? Of course,” Tom shook his head as he looked at Michael and Nikita. “She isn’t going to be a problem.”
“She is still researching the angel,” Nikita pointed out and Tom winced. “Yeah… well…”
“We need the initial approach to be made by you… You can get a feel if there are any electronic files that we may be able to get into… if there is another person he confides in… we aren’t looking for her specifically. We’re looking for information on him,” Michael spoke as he watched Nikita shift. She had printed out the information and she held it in her hands. She wasn’t giving it over quite yet.
“I’ll do whatever you need me to do. I can plan an approach... a lot of things to make this easier… Maybe even talk this man…” Tom offered. Nikita looked at Michael and after a few long moments, she passed the paper over. “His name is Joshua Ferguson…”
Tom took the paper and opened it. He glanced at the information and shoved it into his pocket. “We have a problem.”
Nikita tensed immediately as she stood up. “What are you talking about?”
“It’s nothing too much, Nikita,” Tom sighed as he looked around the room and shook his head. “I guess I should have told you…”
“I told you,” Nikita rasped as she looked at Michael with tears in her eyes. Michael had sat down on the arm of the couch and that allowed him to grab his hands around Nikita’s waist. He used his strength to pull Nikita to his lap to keep her from running. She was absolutely not happy and he could see that she was about to flee the room. “What do you mean, Tom?”
“Michael,” Tom looked at the man who was struggling with Nikita. “Nikita… I should have told you…”
“Just spit it out!” Nikita shouted and Tom pulled the paper out and handed it back to Nikita. “I found Joshua Ferguson about two weeks ago.”
“He is dead?” Nikita leaned forward and Michael held onto her tenuously.
“No,” Tom shook his head from side to side. “And I didn’t know officially that he was on the list of the men that you were looking for… But I saw his work history… and something just seemed right to have him somehow connected…”
“Please, Tom,” Michael implored, “Tell us what is going on.”
“He is Laura Rowles’ father,” Tom declared. He watched as Nikita almost became boneless. Michael sat up more and wrapped his arms firmly around Nikita. “This isn’t all bad, Kita…”
“I knew that Laura was still looking into things… so I wanted to learn more about her,” Tom stood up and started to pace from side to side. “She has a strong belief in certain things that I’ve heard about that sometimes happens to children who have parents in certain branches of… law enforcement.”
Nikita looked at the window and shook her head slightly. “We could have been further along, Michael…”
“We had no way of knowing,” Michael pointed out as he talked against her ear. “We did a quick search for her parents and didn’t find anything.”
“He did some work with WITSEC so things are partially hidden,” Tom explained. “And that’s probably why Laura was finding all of our stories hard to believe…. She probably lived it with her father.”
“So she’ll know that we were completely a farce,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “And Lisa will be in danger.”
“No,” Tom stopped as he looked at Nikita. “I think he can help us with Laura. He obviously had some history with the shades of gray that we’ve had to operate in… he can help us.”
“That means we need him to help us with a lot of things, Tom,” Michael warned and Tom exhaled. “Give me a chance at this… Maybe I won’t even cross paths with Laura.”
“I think you want to cross paths with the detective,” Nikita hissed as she pushed Michael’s hand off of her waist and stormed away. Tom rubbed a hand across his face as he saw Michael staring at him. “What?”
“Detective Rowles became Laura, when?” Michael tilted his head to the side and asked. Tom chuckled and shook his head. “It’s not like that.”
“I’m not judging you,” Michael shook his head and Tom looked at where Nikita went and then back to Michael. “She is a good woman. A good man raised her.”
“And she might be able to give you an approach on a man who has been off the grid for a while,” Michael bated Tom for a moment.
“I wouldn’t play it that way,” Tom shook his head from side to side. “A man like him… I think that Joshua Ferguson would be upset if I used his daughter. If you want true information, I can’t get tied into something like that. But I have to be prepared for Laura.”
“Maybe you can just romance her,” Michael shrugged his shoulders and Tom bowed his head. “She wouldn’t look twice at me.”
