Joshua Ferguson opened up the door as Tom stood there. He looked right at the man and didn’t have to look twice to know that this was a man that he had met before. “Good evening, Mr. Ferguson… My name is Tom Wiley…”
“You are Virgil Needham’s son,” Joshua shook his head as he looked at Tom. Tom swallowed hard and nodded his head. “Yes.”
“I remember you… “ Joshua spoke as he pushed the door open. “I take it that you followed in your father’s footsteps.”
“Not exactly,” Tom shook his head from side to side as he entered into the quaint house and closed the door. “Things have changed.”
“Oh, your father must not be liking that,” Joshua chuckled.
“He passed away five years ago,” Tom informed the man who had worked with his father in the past. Joshua was silent for a while and cleared his throat. “I’m sorry to hear that….”
Tom didn’t comment as he followed Joshua into the living room where the television was promptly turned off. “You said that things have changed… I’ve heard some rumors.”
“I’m in charge of a nonprofit,” Tom pointed out and Joshua tilted his head to the side. “Ah... and you just happened on my doorstep for a friendly get-together because you are in the neighborhood…”
Tom sat down and rubbed his hands along his knees. “Things have changed out there. Some of the rumors… needed to happen.”
“And because you didn’t agree with your father’s handlings of things,” Joshua pointed out and Tom shrugged his shoulders. “Things were being taken care of.”
“So that whole thing is gone? Really? Then what are you doing here?”
He didn’t have to answer. Joshua had given him the ability to slip away from those parts that he didn’t want to answer. Joshua may know of underground chatter about organizations, but he didn’t know about Section One. He didn’t even know about the Center. He didn’t fully understand Tom’s tie into the whole mess and what his father was in the whole role. But that didn’t matter. Tom could answer some questions. “I’m here to help some friends who may be tied to you slightly.”
“Me?” Joshua leaned back. “I’m retired.”
“But you still handle the children of the fire…”
“Oh my,” Joshua jumped as he blinked his eyes. “I haven’t had anyone inquire about those children in a long time. Most of them are adults by now.”
“I thought the ages all got mixed up,” Tom stated and Joshua tilted his head. “So you are looking for a young one? I was able to switch those out with another case manager. Todd Hunter.”
“Really?” Tom asked and Joshua nodded his head. “I was on my way to retirement when I got stuck into that whole mess. I didn’t want to spend years worrying about the babies growing old in the system. Todd was young and eager to take them all.”
“He is off the grid,” Tom revealed and Joshua only shrugged his shoulders. He wasn’t surprised by it and he leaned forward. “Must be someone important if you are here… using a connection of your father’s…”
“I didn’t need my father’s connections to find you. I just selected to approach you directly,” Tom corrected as he leaned back and cross his legs. At least it sounded like Joshua had some information about this Todd. Maybe he would be able to point Tom in the right direction.
But things were going to change.
“Dad? I’m home…” the familiar voice called out as the front door opened. Tom turned as Joshua called out. “Laura… I’m in the living room…”
There was no way to try to hide it. Tom faced it straight on as Laura looked at him. She dropped her hands. “What are you doing here?”
“Ah… Laura… this is Tom… I used to work with his father,” Joshua spoke and Tom looked at Laura.
“So you really aren’t in Special Forces,” Laura spat as she dropped her keys and purse on the end table. Tom bit his lip and Joshua stood up. “Laura… what are you doing?”
“He is part of the whole cover-up about that girl who I know witnessed the murder of her foster parents!” Laura exclaimed. Tom stood up and nodded his head. “I cannot explain the details of what happened, but please know that it was necessary but it is best that you stop.”
“Listen to him,” Joshua declared and Laura rolled her eyes. “God… This is why I should have moved out… you have me tied into your spy games!”
Laura stormed away and Tom exhaled. He turned with a frown on his face. “I apologize for this… she would have never known if I didn’t have to find out about the children.”
“So the deep dark ghosts who did bad things for the good of the world have been transformed into the angel?” Joshua tilted his head as he looked at Tom.
Tom knew that Joshua was more than just a WITSEC official. This was the man that his father had come to when Red Cell had kidnapped him as a young boy. Joshua didn’t ask questions and helped his father rescue him without the use of Center or Section. He knew a lot and had never been a risk.
“A side of effect of things changing… a good one,” Tom admitted without too much information.
“The young child that you are helping to look for…”
“Was put up for adoption at the wrong place at the wrong time…”
“You are doing this for someone who was one of these ghosts?” Joshua inquired. Tom shook his head from side to side. Joshua smirked as he walked to a desk and opened it up. He then had several more locks on safes to get thru before he pulled out some paper. “Todd writes me about once every six months on the children that he took off of me… not much to identify where he is. I’ve tried.”
“I know some people,” Tom took the paper in his hands and he looked upstairs as the door slammed.
“I’ll talk to her. She has a great sense of right and wrong… and just needs some help thru the shades of gray,” Joshua stated and Tom whispered his thanks. He shook Joshua’s hand and moved towards the door, expecting to leave.
“I take it that the woman in charge of that part of the underbelly… she is getting a second chance and somehow had a child…. I hope she made it back to her Frenchman,” Joshua spoke as Tom didn’t turn around to look at him.
Joshua was so much more than retired WITSEC.
“Your father would be proud of you,” Joshua spoke and Tom turned at that time with a shrug of his shoulders. “I just run a nonprofit.”
