Adam walked down the sidewalk and looked from house to house. He knew that Rhoda and Nat lived somewhere on this street. He was frustrated that he hadn’t met Lisa yet so he was going to meet her without his father’s or Nikita’s knowledge.
He wasn’t sure what the new thing that had Nikita and his father talking in hushed tones, but he was relieved that it gave him the ability to say that he was going to play catch with one of his teammates. Then he started out towards Rhoda’s and Nat’s. He wasn’t even sure what he was going to do when he found the house.
It wasn’t going to matter because he saw Rhoda walking out of the house with a girl with long blonde hair. Adam almost stopped walking when he saw the girl he knew had to be Lisa. She didn’t look like she was struggling with anything and she was even smiling as she walked with Rhoda.
“Hey, Rhoda…. Where are you off too?” Adam waved as he strolled over as carefully as he could. Rhoda whirled around on her heels and blinked. “Adam…”
Rhoda glanced at Lisa as she saw the teenage girl look at Adam, who was looking older than his years truly were. He was looking a lot more like his father each day. He seemed to have grown by inches in just a few short weeks. “You… have gotten so big…”
“Nikita says it happens before freshman year,” Adam shrugged his shoulders and Rhoda watched as Adam smiled at Lisa. “Ah… Hi, I’m Adam.”
Lisa extended her hand and smiled back at Adam. “My name is Lisa.”
“Lisa is…she is my daughter,” Rhoda explained and Adam nodded his head as he folded his hands in front of his waist. “It’s nice to finally meet you Lisa.”
“Yeah,” Lisa blushed slightly as she looked at Adam. “I’ve heard Nikita talk about you.”
“She is a neat woman… a mum of sorts to me,” Adam found it hard to say as he was sure that Lisa could understand why it was hard. Lisa looked at Rhoda and shoved her hands into the pockets. “We were going to the mall… I’ve grown a bit too.”
“Where were you heading? Does your father know where you are?” Rhoda questioned and Adam could see that it had been agreed upon by the adults to keep Adam and Lisa from meeting each other. He didn’t understand why.
“I’m going to the park to practice baseball some… I have to catch up,” Adam explained and Rhoda frowned. “You are taking the scenic route, aren’t you?”
“My dad and Nikita are busy with something… Jason is over at the house too. I can’t hack into the systems right now to find out what is going on so I left early… it doesn’t hurt to get some extra exercise,” Adam smoothly replied and Lisa chuckled. “You hack?”
“When the adults don’t lock things down too tightly,” Adam nodded his head up and down. “So…. Are you in high school?”
“I’ll be going back to school in the fall. I’m home schooling right now,” Lisa explained and Rhoda opened up the car door. “Come on, Lisa… we want to get to that sale.”
“I didn’t mean to delay you…” Adam looked at Lisa and shivered. Her eyes were a beautiful golden hazel that sparkled in the sun. She was lanky and tall. Adam could only think that if Lisa would have had blue eyes she could have been Nikita’s younger sister. “I should get going.”
Rhoda nodded her head as she watched Adam walk passed the car. Rhoda continued to study Adam and saw him look over his shoulder several times. Rhoda tossed her purse into the back seat and found Lisa waiting for her to get into the car. “He is so nice. Why didn’t you want me to meet him?”
“Lisa, you are doing well right now… but you have good days and bad days. I want you to get settled before you start making friends,” Rhoda explained even as Lisa began to frown. “But I would be happy if got to spend time with others my age. I was in high school, Rhoda. I had friends. I was in activities like debate and I was writing for the school newspaper. Now I don’t have any of that.”
“And you have nightmares,” Rhoda pointed out as she turned the car on. “You want to be at your best when you meet people.”
“But Adam… he knows about that place… right?”
Rhoda knew that she was speaking about Section. It was never something that came up with conversation. She didn’t know if Adam had ever been inside of Section, but he knew a lot about Section. It was clear that his father didn’t lie about things had taken huge measures to train Adam while young to handle things if something happened. “I know that he knows some of what his father was involved in.”
“So I could talk to him about it,” Lisa urged and Rhoda shook her head. “I don’t think that is what Michael and Nikita want him to do. He has been untouched by most of it…”
“Untouched? He hacks, Rhoda!” Lisa exclaimed and Rhoda sighed. “Give it some time, Lisa… wait till later in the summer. “
Lisa folded her arms across her chest as Rhoda started to drive. Lisa stared out the window and Rhoda hated it. She pulled towards the mall after ten minutes in silence and she looked at Lisa. “So… is there anything else other than clothes that you want to buy?”
“Can I get my own computer?” Lisa inquired and Rhoda felt a shout in her head. Damn that Adam! “I think you have enough time on our computer in the den for school work…”
“I want to play games, Rhoda. I had a computer before…” Lisa’s voice cracked and Rhoda knew that she was being manipulated. Rhoda opened up the car and stood up into the parking lot, ready to admit defeat.
“Windows or Mac?”
