Michael walked back and forth in the kitchen as Adam sat there, rolling his eyes. Michael continued to be quiet and Adam finally groaned. “I can’t believe that Rhoda already called you.”

“We asked that you didn’t push the issue and meet Lisa at this time,” Michael stopped as he turned to face his son. Michael had a whole bunch of things going on his head and he was trying to stay to the facts right now about what Adam had done.

The call from Rhoda had come at not the best time. Michael was in bed with Nikita, neither of them intending on the afternoon interlude, but they were drawn there once Adam left to go play ball with his friends. To have the call interrupt those moments of them holding each other in their arms was not the best way to have the afternoon end.

Adam just always thought he knew best.

“But she didn’t have any problems with me. She kind of looked happy to have someone that is almost her age around. You can’t protect her,” Adam spoke and Michael felt his pulse increase. Adam was talking to him as if he was the father. “Nikita and I are the adults. We make the rules. You may not agree with them, Adam. But we expect them to be followed.”

“Gosh, Dad… it’s so not what Lisa needs right now,” Adam groaned as he rolled his eyes. “You don’t care about what she really is worried about right now. You are worried about the bad things. Maybe she wants to have some fun.”

“And maybe we should have allowed Lisa’s new parents make the decision on when you two should meet.”

“It’s not like we are going to fall madly in love with each other, make out in the car and run off to elope! I haven’t even started high school yet,” Adam shook his head back and forth as Michael wondered if Adam was actually hearing what he was saying. Michael feared that this was just the first signs of teenage rebellion.

“The point is, you are the follow our rules. We don’t have many, Adam,” Michael spoke firmly and clearly as he watched his son. Adam shrugged his shoulders. “Sure, whatever, Dad.”

“Adam,” Michael spoke and Adam sighed as he looked up with his eyes just rolling from side to side. “Come on, Dad. Just drop it. You have other things you should be more worried about than me meeting Lisa.”

Michael started to count in his head but before he got to three, he spoke. “And what do you exactly mean by that Adam? I’m fairly interested in what you think you know more than I do.”

“I’ve been trying to talk to you forever about Nikita…”

“Adam,” Michael shook his head as he moved away from the spot that he had been at. He didn’t know why Adam always felt entitled to impart his thoughts about his father’s relationship with Nikita, but Michael also didn’t know how to make it stop. Adam was right about half the time and he conveniently forgot the half of the times that he was wrong about Nikita. He would gloat about when he was right, but he did have amnesia to some of the stupid things that he had done, like trying to play hide and seek in the snow with Nikita during the blizzard.

“Dad, you are missing something huge. You have to listen to me… it’s really important because Nikita is going to hold it against you if you get this wrong,” Adam turned in his chair to look at his dad. “I know that you think that you are older and wiser, Dad….”

“Adam, I’m warning you,” Michael shook his head from side to side. However, Adam’s body language gave away that he wasn’t going to stop.

“I just know her really well… and you are going to screw something up and I can’t allow you to do that!” Adam declared. Michael dropped his hands and then folded them behind his back. He tilted his head to the side. “I want to hear this new thing to know about Nikita that you don’t think I know about.”

Adam arched an eyebrow as he was silent. Michael moved his head slightly as he leaned forward. “Enlighten me, son. What don’t I know about Nikita?”

Sensing that he could be on the wrong path, Adam hesitated. But Michael watched as Adam practically pushed his chest out proudly to make his announcement. “Nikita would say yes now if you ask her to marry you… and you aren’t going to do it because you think that she doesn’t want to get married… and it’s stupid because she will say yes and she is going to get upset because you haven’t noticed that her mind has changed ---“

“Adam…” Michael spoke as he rolled his shoulders back but Adam shook his head from side to side. “You are going to let me say all of this because you said that I could enlighten you… and I know that you don’t believe me and you think that you know Nikita better… but I know her plenty. I knew how to make her happy with things like the Rose Parade… so you should listen to me because I know that I’m right about this… Nikita won’t tell you this but she so wants you to figure it out and ask her… but she isn’t going to tell you or even hint at it…”

It took a while for Adam to stop but it was when Michael hadn’t said his name any further that Adam finally drifted off. “Dad… are you listening?”

“Are you done?” Michael inquired and Adam frowned as he was confused. “Ah… I don’t know… I think I am… but you weren’t listening, were you?”

“I know,” Michael answered. He watched as Adam blinked his eyes and then shook his head. “No way are you going to stop me like that!”

“Adam,” Michael spoke softly and Adam stood to his feet. “Come on, you think by telling me that you know this that it stops this conversation? I need to make sure that you are going to do something… because next you’ll be telling me that even though she wants it now it isn’t the right time and you have to wait because there will be a better time…”

Michael listened to Adam rant as he couldn’t believe when his son became so long winded. It had to be because Mick was around a lot more. Adam was shifted his weight from side to side and frequently using his hands while he stood there continue to spout out what he knew to be the gospel by Adam.

“Ah… hi,” Nikita muttered as she looked at Michael after seeing Adam almost starting to sweat with the passionate speech that he was giving. Adam groaned as he looked at Nikita. “Dad!”

“Should I leave?” Nikita inquired as she looked at Michael. Michael shook his head and reached for Nikita’s hand.

Something glimmered and caused Adam to wince.

Michael smiled as he saw the ring on Nikita’s finger. He didn’t know how he knew. He just sensed that the time had changed and what Nikita would say today. He hadn’t even expected to ask Nikita this afternoon, but as Adam left the house, Michael couldn’t wait with the ring upstairs until he could get Nikita whisked away to a romantic dinner this evening.

That was another reason why Rhoda interrupted their afternoon interlude.

“Is that… ah… what? I don’t understand…” Adam muttered and Nikita chuckled as she leaned into Michael’s arms. “You said that Adam knew.”

“He knew that you would say yes,” Michael stated but he looked at his son and then wrapped his arms around Nikita more. “He just didn’t know that I got your ring and that I asked.”

Nikita chuckled and Adam sat down. “I’m so… confused…”

“We are engaged,” Nikita spoke happily as she said it. She looked at Michael’s green eyes and laughed. “I love saying that. I thought it would feel odd… but it doesn’t.”

Michael gazed at Adam and didn’t understand why Adam was now pouting. Michael knew that he was going to have his hands full with Adam being a teenager. But Michael wasn’t going to worry about that now. He was engaged.

“So, what did I walk into here?” Nikita inquired and Michael tilted his head to study his son. “We were going to discuss Adam’s punishment for saying that he was going to play ball when he actually made a point to meet Lisa.”

Nikita pressed her lips together as she held her words. Adam was still processing what was going on and didn’t protest. Nikita looked at Michael and turned her back so she could lean against him. “Today is special, Michael. I Think we can cut Adam a break this time.”

“Really?” Adam questioned as he finally spoke again.

“I don’t like that you didn’t listen to us, but you haven’t done much to not follow our rules of late. I know that you have been concerned about Lisa and maybe I should have let you meet her sooner…” Nikita shrugged her shoulders as she turned and kissed Michael’s cheek. “Cutting a break for Adam today is not showing weakness… but I don’t want to punish on our Engagement Day.”

“You are lucky,” Michael warned as he looked at Adam, but he couldn’t maintain a cold stare as he felt Nikita in his arms.

To think that Adam didn’t know that his father knew that Nikita was ready to say yes!
