Laura stood outside the door of the hotel room that Tom was staying in. She wasn’t sure why he hadn’t left the city yet. Didn’t her father indicate that he got the information that he needed? That should mean that he should have left.
Unless there was something else going on.
Her throat was raw as she swallowed. She had listened to her father for two days outline various aspects of a history that she did not know nor understood. He told her about things that were stopped and the few things that were not able to be stopped. She saw his pain in those areas that were failures and the grief of the things that were success. Still she only felt that she heard a fictional story.
It couldn’t be the truth.
She had cried when he told her out the organization had turned and changed with different people in charge. That he found a way out because he was just on the fringe, but still able to know some details. He told of how something that had in its roots been voluntary to serve within had turned into the worst kind of prison. Her father told of the innocents who got sucked into the world and then told of how in the end it was an innocent who got the majority of the innocents out.
Then Laura had to wonder how that got her involved with Tom, Nick LaRoque and Renee Walters.
“Did you think I wouldn’t know that you were out here?” Tom asked as he stood behind Laura. He watched as she jumped and turned towards him. That was when he saw her face and how it was clear that Joshua hadn’t been able to do much to make her feel good about the reality he lived in and got out of. It was clear that it scared her to the core. “Laura…”
“Were you trailing? Did you tag me with a tracker or something?” Laura questioned as she started to rifle thru her purse. She dropped it and stared at him. “I… I… I’m not in this thing…”
Tom lifted up a plastic bag and then pulled out a soda and pushed it towards her. “You look like you are thirsty… and honestly, I had gone out to get some refreshments. I saw you as I was crossing the parking lot. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Tom brushed to the side and extended his arm to open up the door. He allowed it to swing open and he looked at Laura. “Do you want to check the room out?”
“I wouldn’t know what I’m looking for,” Laura complained as she clung onto the bottle tightly. Tom stepped into the room and took her elbow to bring her into the room. “You should sit down.”
Laura swallowed hard and was blinking her eyes when she realized that Tom had taken the soda out of her hand and opened it. “You were squeezing too hard.”
Rubbing her forehead, Laura found the soda being extended again. “I didn’t drug it or anything.”
Laura stared at him coldly. “Do you think that’s funny?”
“No,” Tom shook his head from side to side. “But I think you are focused so heavily on the bad parts… you can’t see the good.”
“The good?”
“What didn’t happen because of what your father was involved with,” Tom suggested as he sat down on the edge of the bed and finally he watched Laura sit down in the wooden chair. She took a sip of the soda as Tom pulled out a bag of chips and opened his own bottle. “You are wondering why I’m still here.”
“Yes,” Laura nodded her head up and down. She watched as the bag of chips was extended to her, but she shook her head from side to side to indicate that she didn’t want anything more.
“Someone wanted me to be here to answer your questions,” Tom stated. He watched as Laura frowned. “Renee?”
“Her name is actually Nikita,” Tom corrected. Laura sat back as she processed what was being said and she studied the bottle in her hands. “Nikita? And Nick is…”
“Michael,” Tom provided as he took some chips and ate them. He dusted his hands and tossed the bag onto the table behind Laura’s back. “She knew that you would need to have someone more to talk too.”
“And she thought you were good?”
“She would have been here if she could have,” Tom replied steadily. “I’m working on some things for them too…”
“So you work for them? So… there is still a group out there…”
“Oh no,” Tom shook his head from side to side. “The amount of people that know… I know where most of them are and live… there is no group anymore. Your father told you that.”
“So… did they get out?”
“Nikita ended it,” Tom spoke and Laura blinked her eyes. She would have never thought that.
“She was so innocent, Laura,” Tom continued. “But who knows if the organization was kept in its original format… volunteer-service… A different world and time… Nikita may have volunteered… when the organization was doing it the way it was supposed to be done… instead... she ended it… and what I am doing for her, I’m doing that as a favor for a friend.”
Laura shook her head. “I’m so confused.”
“That’s understandable… and you aren’t sleeping…”
“I’m… I’m imaging things… what if’s… attacks that could have been…”
“And do you think that people like Nikita and Michael don’t live with those thoughts either?” Tom’s voice cracked. “I know that I do… and I wasn’t that deep…”
Laura swallowed hard and leaned forward. “I’m so tired.”
“Take a nap,” Tom motioned to the bed. He stood up and pulled out a computer. “I have work to do… and sleep will help you.”
“I should go home…”
“But you don’t want too…” Tom pointed out and Laura stood up. She headed towards the door and then watched as Tom put the computer up on the table without watching her. She moved to the bed and sunk down. “I have one question.”
“I doubt that it is only one question,” Tom stated without looking back at her. But she didn’t follow up. That was when Tom turned to look at her.
“The angel… it’s related to them, right?”
“Do you need to know the truth to believe in the angel?” Tom inquired back and Laura fell backwards knowing that she got the answer without Tom simply saying yes.
